    Thanks Morse1001,

    One easy one desrves another!

    Who am I?

I was born in Bristol England
    I was a soldier
I held a high position in Australia

I said: Some of us may forget that, of all the allies, it was the Australians who first broke the invincibility of the Japanese army".

    I died 35 years ago

That would be Field Marshal Viscount Slim of Burma, who served as Australia's Governor-General after the war.

The quiz has moved on and I don't want to backtrack, but can you please provide a source for him holding the post in 1944.

After the death of Heydrich in 1942, he was appointed acting Reichsprotektor of Bohemia and Moravia and I read on another forum while googling this one that he was dismissed from all posts in 1943. I cannot confirm that he was still in post as head of the Orpo in 1944 and there is precious little I can find on the web.

    Okay....

At the Battle of Savo Island, on August 8/9, 1942, four Allied heavy cruisers were sunk.

    Name them.

    Bonus question:

On the way home, the Japanese lost a heavy cruiser to an American submarine, S-44, skippered by Cdr. John S. "Dinty" Moore.

    Name the cruiser.

    Not correct Kiwiwriter,

Has the poignancy of Churchill admittedly, which is what drew me to it I suppose.

    You are indeed correct James.

    Harold Lloyd Hopkins
    1890 - 1946.
Roosevelts right hand man and responsible for Lend Lease negotiations with Molotov & Stalin & Churchill.

There is also evidence he convinced Roosevelt to send Uranium to the Russians as well.

A KGB "agent" or "Red Sympathiser" or both, it was to be found later. He was supposed to have been the mysterious agent "19".

Please ask away with another question.

    Who said this?

"My strength has now been reduced to the equivalent of 36 squadrons...we should be able to carry on the war single-handed for some time if not indefinitely."
