Earlier in the summer, we did some blank firing from one of the monopods for the Vickers machine gun. These were issued so that the guns could be dismounted from their armoured cars and used without the tripod. With an armoured car Vickers machine gun, there was a shoulder stock and pistol grip fitted; however, I recently learnt that the 52nd (Lowland) Division, in their light role as an airportable division, equipped their Vickers machine guns with these monopods as well. These were standard Mark I guns as used by the infantry so it had to be supported by the machine gunner. You can see from the video that it was surprisingly stable with my elbows on the ground behind the gun. I hope it's of interest. Richard
