    In fact, there was a lack of understanding of the jet stream. In 1944, an Allied bomber stream headed to Berlin expecting 45 mi h21 (;20 m s21 ) winds encountered 120 mi h21 (;54 m s21 ) winds, resulting in the loss of 72 aircraft, many of them when they followed wind-blown marker flares and mistakenly altered course to fly over higher concentrations of enemy antiaircraft batteries (WW2Talk 2016).
