is this a better option then ? I believe these get heavy when wet, (the hats not the.....) But there's always an excuse for a slaughter, from Wiki: "Army officials say approximately 100 skins are taken every year from the annual cull of thousands of bears by native Inuit hunters in a Canadian government programme to keep numbers under control."
I served with a Sikh who was RLC in Bosnia who wore a turban with a RLC cap badge-Personally I didn't give a toss what he wore as long as he was good at his job, and he was.
Surely the point is that regiments wear uniforms and should all be alike ? If the uniform includes a turban then they should all wear it. Personally, I'd make the Brigade of Guards drill in General Service caps. That'd wipe the smug expression off their faces.
It wouldn't be quite so bad if the Guards, AAC and R Sigs didn't have different turban styles... No different to how squaddies wear they berets, amazing how many shapes can be made from the one design. :p
I've worked wth a Sikh in the RAF; he wore a turban with an RAF badge. I never thought about it. It was never an issue. Roxy Edited to add; if the US military refuses to enlist/commission Sikhs, then (IMHO) they are losing out.
I would rather have a full Sikh regiment than to see a full bearded turban wearing man marching alongside a bearskin wearing Guardsman - on the pretext that the turban is scared to them - it is NOT sacred...it was instituted after the second Sikh war around 1846 when they were introduced to the British Army - they complained bitterly that their "KESH" - long hair was sacred and so the British found the Turkish Turbant to cover up their sacred long hair - the KESH is just one of the 5 sacred things the others being"KACHH" = white cotton shorts - "KARA" = steel bracelet - "KANGA " - wooden comb - "KIRPAN" = steel dagger - they have been pulling this Turban conn job for years - and even the MOUNTIES fell for it.. Cheers
I have meet Sikhs who have shaved off the beard and cut the hair they are still alive.... I wonder if you get enough brits in india you can start up a Regiment of bear skins ,and claim it is your heritage. If you go to a a Sikh Gurudwara (Temple, Church) you have to cover your hair regardless of Nationality, Race or Religion, even if you are bald. So why is it so hard for people to follow your own rules and traditions... Sounds like you can get awy with anything on Religious grounds now days. If not you must be a Racist.... Next you can have Army Nurses in Burqa.. as it is there religious right.... Sikh Regiment Hindu Regiment Muslem Regiment Buddhist Regiment Communist Regiment Now it has started it is here to stay
2nd Life Guards -The muster rolls of the period show many foreign names, mainly German, and a considerable number of these were mentioned as musicians under the heading of 'trade before enlistment'. In keeping with the style of the day, there were also several black musicians in the Band, and as late as 1840 the 2nd Life Guards still had three such serving. And rightly so.
Did someone say there were no turbaned Sikhs in the US military ? Google ''Simran Preet Singh Lamba'' I see there are also a few turban wearing Sikhs in the Canadian forces. Thought this one a bit dodgey. Letting rip with a Gimpey with a red cross armband on, it could be taken the wrong way. http://www.sikharchives.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/canadian_sikh-_soldiers_2006.jpg pic from here. He is not wearing a turban, it is the item worn underneath the turban. ... I know he's not , I just thought it looked a bit odd, the red cross armband & a Gimpey. First thing, I tend to be very wary of anything the Daily Telegraph says. As my granny used to say of some people, " He says owt but his prayers, and he whistles them." I think the reporter here has been (deliberately?)ambiguous, in short he'd doing a bit of stirring. Option one:-The military chiefs float this idea and then go to the Sikh community for their ideas. Option two:-Some; self appointed; representative of the Sikh community approach the military chiefs with the idea of a Sikh regiment. I cannot see for the life of me, option one having occurred. If by any stretch of the imagination it did, then I'd have to say sack the lot of them! A regiment built around a religion, is a crazy idea, Catholic and Protestant regiments? Wasn't there some bother the last we tried this? To finish off, I agree totally with Owen on this one. it's a non starter.
Letting rip with a Gimpey with a red cross armband on, it could be taken the wrong way. http://www.sikharchives.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/canadian_sikh-_soldiers_2006.jpg Thats about right-some of the worse soldiers I served with were Canadian - We thought they were American wannabes. Our Canadian SSM thought he was John Wayne from the Green Berets and wanted to bomb everyone - 100% bell end and was a prime candiate for getting someone killed or more likely himself by one of us.
