These two photos show the Western Desert in 1942. The photos were taken around November 1941 during Operation Crusader.

Force E was deployed in a diversionary attack to the South of the main attack. They started off at Jarabub and Siwa Oasis.

Can anyone identify the truck please?

The initial pictured vehicle seems more rounded than the squarish C15A.

(What are you doing still up at 0430?)

Actually, I know sweet fanny adams about trucks but I'm trying to get one up on VP! ;)

0430? One of the joys of being an insomniac!! Besides, I've seen you on here when its mid afternoon over here :D

    p.s. I reckon it's rounded because it's been sand-blasted (now THAT should p-off the truck nerds :D)

Very hard to say from such a small image, I'll try and enlarge it properly when I'm on the photoshop pooter.

So many similar trucks from a variety of manufacturers.

I'd say best candidates were Chevy C15, closely followed by a Ford F15, both of Canadian manufacture.
'15cwt truck' might describe it best. ;)

Assorted Morrises and a Guy Ant also nearly fit the bill so that's far from a definitive ID... Allied trucks can be really hard to be certain about as so many major and minor details changed throughout the production run, the CMP trucks were made by several manufacturers (each with their own variations) for the whole course of the war.

    What is this "Technically" business?

I know bugger all about trucks as well however to me on that photo it looks like a 1500 however the shape still seems "iffy" for a C15A.

It referes to the fact that the all-knowing-one hasn't actually said that it isn't a C15A ;) Until that (inevitable) moment when he comes up with the right answer I'd like to think I'm right :D

    p.s. 3.30pm? What time's it in Oz?

That's the trouble, the trucks were built to a standard-ish shape but over their production runs so many changes could be made that a ford from 1940 might resemble a chevy from 1945 more than it does later models of the same Marque. The C15 it most closely resembles has a cab completely different to the C15 in post 4.... but it's still a c15.

This is why I never walk up to an owner at Beltring and say "Nice C15/a" much safer to say "nice Ford/Dodge/Chevy"... as it's usually written on the front. ;)
