Signaller, Acting Lance Corporal Richard Nelson BEM, The Royal Corps of Signals

During the night of the 4th/5th May 1941, during a heavy aerial bombardment, Lance Corporal Nelson was on duty at the Waverley Telephone Exchange, Belfast, which was being used for military purposes. For seven hours he continued at his post, notwithstanding grave dangers from the collapse of blazing buildings, and refused to leave the same until warned by A.F.S. and A.R.P. that there was an immediate danger of a fire spreading to the place in which he was operating.

Not until the heat became unbearable did he temporarily leave his post, coming back to it at short intervals and communicating with his headquarters, informing them of which lines were still operating.

There was a shift of wind about 6am which drew the flames away from the exchange which enabled Lance Corporal Nelson to resume continuous operations, which he until relieved at 8am, having been on duty under most trying conditions from 10pm the previous night.

Corporal Leonard Owens MM, Attached GHQ Liaison Regiment, The Royal Corps of Signals

    Awarded Periodical Military Medal.

From 5th March 1945 to the cessation of hostilities Cpl. Owens has been the NCO in charge of wireless communications of a squadron of jeeps operating as forward reconnaissance for 2 Canadian Army in Holland and Germany. Throughout this operation Cpl. Owens carried out his duties to the utmost satisfaction often under fire.

Previously Cpl. Owens was senior NCO of a small detachment of GHQ Liasion Regiment which with a detachment of 2 SAS Regt. was dropped into the Eastern Vosges by parachute on August 12/13. Throughout this operation behind the enemy lines Cpl. Owens was largely resonsible for the vital communications which continuously worked perfectly in spite of many difficulties which would have deterred a less determined or less capable soldier. Without these excellent wireless communications, with the enemy always close at hand, the operation could have only ended in failure.

In addition to his signalling responsibilities this NCO was always willing to volunteer for any other task or duty which he discharged with cheerfulness and efficiency.

Cpl. Owens won the admiration and respect of all ranks of the Regt. to which he was attached.

Signalman James Bruce O'Neill MM, attached GHQ Signals BEF, The Royal Corps of Signals.

    Awarded Military Medal

Harkin and O'Neill were captured on 26th May 40 at Calais and McCallum three days previously at La Chapelle near Boulogne. All three were imprisoned at Lamsdorf (Stalag VIII B - now Stalag 344) and working camps attached. During the winter of 1943/44 they began their preparations for escape, and whilst at Karlsbrunn stole a wireless set. Unfortuantely they were moved back to the main camp before everything was ready and, realising they would not be able to smuggle the wireless set into Lamsdorf, they gave it to a P/W in a working camp at Freudenthal.

In Apr 44 they were transferred to Romerstadt, but soon after their arrival they heard of an anticipated increase in the number of guards. Although they had not then obtained civilian clothes nor completed the forging of their papers, they decided to make an attempt.

On 24 Apr 44 they got through a window, the bar of which was removed and then replaced it after their exit by other P/W. They then cut the barbed wire fence and replaced it after they had emerged. Before morning they reached a deer-stalkers hut near Karlsbrunn, where they obtained civilian clothes from acquaintances they had made whilst working in that district.

On 13 May they begun a series of well planned train journeys which, after five days, brought them to Stettin. With the assistance of French workers, they remained hidden until 23 May, when they boarded a Swedish vessel. One of the crew hid them in a coal bunker and as the German Port Control party failed to discover them they were landed at Malmo, Sweden, on 26 May 44.

I recommend these three men for the award of the MM.

Acting Lance Corporal Robert John Quy MM, 4 Corps Signals, The Royal Corps of Signals.

    Awarded Military Medal.

Corporal Quy has served on the 4 Corps front for the past two years. In his capacity as a Linemanhe has shown outstanding courage and leadership on many occasions. Between 14 and 18 March 1944 he was one of a party which was entirely surrounded by the enemy in the neighbourhood of MS. 100 on the Imphal-Tiddim Road. For forty eight hours he repeatedly carried out line repairs in the face of heavy enemy machine gun fire, showing complete disregard for his own personal safety; later when it became apparent that line cmn. was no longer feasable he assisted in manning infantry machine guns with the enemy in very close proximity. On 18th March, together with another B.O.R. he carried a wounded officer on a stretcher for a total of eighteen miles, having first negotiated the enemy lines.

On 28th March the enemy has established a road block at MS 72; Cpl Quy volunteered to lay a cable diversion around this road block in the endeavour to re-establish line communication with our forces further north; he laid his line at great personal risk. as he was liable to be sniped or ambushed by the enemy who were in strength in this area. Throughout the whole period he showed cool premeditated courage and devotion to duty of a high order.

Acting Lance Sergeant, Corporal George Morton Vernon BEM, 12th Line of Communications Signals, The Royal Corps of Signals.

    Recommended MM.

    Awarded BEM.

During the laying of special underground carrier cables from Venlo to Terlinden, infm was received from Combat Tps 52 Div that mines were to be expected along our route. No RE mine lifting teams were immediately available. This NCO immediately volunteered to lead a party to go with a plough. In spite of no previous experience the party cleared 10 mines themselves and upon the arrival of the RE team assisted in clearing 100 more. At no time was the work, then of a major operational importance, held up. This inspiring example to his men was an instance of this NCO's continuously fine record of leadership and service.

Temporary Major Brian Forster Morton Franks MC, HQ Special Service Brigade, (Middlesex Yeomanry) Royal Corps of Signals.

Originally recommended a DSO and changed to an Immediate MC by Montgomery.

At Termoli between Oct 3rd and 7th Major Franks carried out duties of Brigade Major SS Bde. Throughout the period this officer showed a fine sense of initiative and complete disregard of personal danger. Early on he saw movement in the station and went forward by himself and captured two German soldiers. Later he was continually visiting the most forward troops making any necessary adjustments and exposing himself fearlessly. During the critical counter-attacks period his personal example and steadiness were an example to all ranks and did much to save the situation, particulary on the extreme RIGHT where he personally organised and placed the troops.

He was continually leading and encouraging the men and his resolute manner and confidence were a most important factor.

Lieutenant Richard Allen Cox GM, Royal Corps of Signals

    Awarded GM

On the 10th January, 1945, at the Brussels/Evere aerodrome, an aircraft with full bomb load, overshoot on landing, crashed into a hangar and burst into flames. Lieutenant Cox and Sergeant Hooper went at once to the scene of the accident and were warned by escaped members of the crew that the bombs might go off at any moment. By this time the aircraft and hangar were burning fiercely, the ammunition was exploding and a pool of burning petrol was spreading slowly over the ground.

With complete disregard for their own safety, Lieutenant Cox and Sergeant Hooper went to the burning aircraft and succeeded in dragging two of the crew to safety. The bombs then exploded and Lieutenant Cox was blown some distance, fortunately without serious injury. Sergeant Hooper was blown violently to the ground and suffered injury to his eyes.

By their coolness and bravery, this officer and NCO saved the lives of two of the crew at great risk of loosing their own.

(No Service Number) 2nd Lieutenant A/ Lietenant John Jerome Collins MC, 2nd Divisional Signals, The Royal Corps of Signals.

This officer found himself at La Panne, on the beach, without any proper signals staff. He, however, not only ran a Corps Signal Office for some time, using dispatch riders and orderlies, without a relief, but personally found and laid cables with his own hands under shell fire and bombing. He was consistently cool in a situation of great difficulty and set a fine example to the men under him.

Signalman Albert Richard Fish MM, 3rd Divisional Signals, The Royal Corps of Signals.

    Awarded MM.

During the action at Furness on 30-31 May, this man was employed on repairing lines to forward battalions. He was for the greater part of the time under heavy shell firebut in disregard of all personal danger he carried out his work and it was largely due to his gallantry and devotion to duty that communications were maintained during the action.

His name was perviously submitted for an award for similiar gallantry during the action the action at Herent from 13-16 May.

Signalman A. Gregory MM, attached 7 Royal Tank Regiment, The Royal Corps of Signals.

Devotion to duty and coolness during heavy enemy bombing and shelling attacks - whilst acting as operator on a wireless truck, this man remained at his post and was unperturbed even by the most furious onslaughts from the air and on the ground.

Lieutenant T/ Captain, A/ Major Arthur John Maunsell Atthill MBE, 4 Armd Bde, 7 Armd Div, 13 Corps, The Royal Corps of Signals.

    Recommended OBE.

    Awarded MBE.

Major Atthill has commanded the Signals serving my Bde. throughout the campaign. He has been untiring, most efficient and resourceful. The communications of 4 Armd Bde HQ have never broken down and have been extremely efficient due mainly to Major Atthill's thoroughness, powers of command and technical efficiency. The success of the Bde could not have been achieved but for the unfailing reliability of its Signals for which he, as their Cmdr, deserves the greatest credit.

Corporal Thomas Watson MM, Attached 1 Regiment Royal Horse Artillery, The Royal Corps of Signals.

    Awarded Immediate Military Medal.

On th evening of 9th Dec. 44, the enemy began to harrass the Regimental gun area south of Faenza with shell-fire as soon as it was dusk and two vital telephone lines were broken. Corporla Watson immediately went out and repaired the lines and then on his own initiative remained out the whole night under almost continuous shell-fire locating and repairing breaks has they occurred.

On 13th Dec. 44, the area was again heavily and accurately shelled for a period of seven hours during which time all external lines were broken. Corporal Watson again remained out under fire the whole time and restored communications as soon as they were destroyed regardless of his personal safety and without waiting for the fire to slacken.

On both occassion he only returned to his HQ when he had ensured that all the lines were intact after the shelling had ceased.

His devotion to duty, initiative and cool courage were an inspiring example to the Line Laying and Maintenance Detachment of which he is in charge.
