I recently had the good fortune to have a chat with Bill Fulton who in September 1944 was a section sergeant in 3 Platoon A Company 2nd Parachute Battalion. He was interviewed by Martin Middlebrook for his 1994 book on Arnhem and briefly Bill was the first man on the bridge and he was told to take his section and capture the south end of the road bridge by an unknown officer. Bill's section grouped under the bridge when a voice asked if there were any NCO's present.
Bill is convinced it was not any of the officers from A Company so who was he?
My thoughts are it could have been either Captain McLean the Adjutant or Captain Boiteux-Buchanan the Intelligence Officer.
Major Lewis of C Company of the 3rd Battlaion reported that it was B-B who 'asked' him to take some of his company to the schoolhouse, so he was certanily allocation defensive positions that night. Another piece of circumstantial evidence should be that Captain McLean should have been close to Colonel Frost and therefore not under the bridge. .. what do other members think?
Does anyone know if Captain McLean has ever lodged any Arnhem memories anywhere?
