A book worth reading on the topic of Palestine is A Captain's Mandate:Palestine 1946-48 by Philip Bruton - Leo Cooper 1996.

A great series, really enjoyed it.

I'm going to have to include Palestine Constabulary (1920-1947) in my areas of interest.

At the weekend I was in Dartmouth and in one of the antique shops was a whistle and badges & personal diary of a constable from that period - havent bought it yet cos its rip off prices.

In relation to the series, the writers show the jewish terrorism as the main threat against the British, and you certainly wouldnt feel very pro-Israel watching the series, but it completely fails to mention that after the UN passed its mandate creating seperate Israeli and Arab states, the Arabs fought a war to try to stop Israel being created - it sort of jumped that bit. In fact, no mention at all.

We need more drama based on post-war Britain, its almost completely ignored other than Northern Ireland.

Lt Col John 'Daddy' Lyne GPR was an Army Co-operation Chief Detaining Officer. Interviews had been scheduled with some eighteen teenage girls, at the Police Barracks in Latrun. They started promptly, early in the morning, and the first three went very smoothly. The next young lady decided to sprawl across the desk and mimic the Col. His escort and driver jumped up to intervene, but were waved back to their chairs. Lyne continued to ignore the girl. However, the process was delayed and two more girls also tried the same thing. By the time the interviews were finished it was past 1.00 pm. The three men headed for Jerusalem, where Col Lyne was to have had a noontime meeting. They never got there; the driver of a British truck, coming from the city, told them about the attack on the King David Hotel, the Col's meeting venue. So, it could be said that Lt Col Lyne owed his life to the antics of three teenage girls.

As a point of interest we have a chap who was a Airborne RE and he had the job of driving the bulldozer to retrieve the dead at the King David Hotel. We have just lost another chap in our association who lost three of his mates out there who were captured and hanged.

    Hi Pete,
Yes the last episode had a very left wing anti israeli agenda which spoilt it for me. Typical Lovvie channel 4.

I don't think it was a Chann 4 Production if I remember correctly. I'm sure it was a Canal + production which is a French TV Company. I think there was another TV firm too but can't remember that one.
