I'm still wading through all the stuff I downloaded! Found a few for my Far East fellas I dont think I have! but only when I'm not surrounded by bubble wrap, brown tape and boxes !
Now just need to get my printer working! or shall I treat my self to a new one after we've moved!

    Regards
    Andy

Just been skimming through the 517 documents in the WO 373/66 file. One of the first pages shows 10 recommendations for George Cross's reduced to George Medals.

I'm still only as far as 373/64.

If anyone has notes about theatres etc for other files that I can add to the spreadsheet, please let me know.

I have only just finished renaming them, and noting down the ones I need to have a look at!
Oh well, it will have to wait until after the move!

    Thought this was worth mentioning.

A note at the start of WO 373/11 Image ref 1578 (covering Gazette date 19 April 1945) states
Due to a faulty Dexter machine Folios 490-589 do not exist.

That's quite a few pages missing.

    Hi Di,

Pages in the Gazette or at Kew ie no citations at all?

As you've seen there are numbers stamped on the top right-hand corner that correspond to that reference to folio no.s and 1578 file starts with 590.

But ahhhh !! I see now that there could be 2 interpretations, and it depends on what a Dexter machine is and what it should/shouldn't do.... anyone?

If it's one of those stamping contraptions used by clerks all over the world, that numbers pages then fine, we are talking simply of a slip up and the citations aren't missing - there's just a gap in the numbering.

If a dexter machine does something else ... like storing / filing (which is what I assumed originally), then the citations themselves are missing.

Make sense? Not sure myself any more .:p

I always assumed the pages were stamped with the thing you posted for filing puposes. The citations were photographed by Kew.

Hi all - I went through the info on this thread and after a bit of dicking around I managed to get a couple of large pdf files covering the bloke I was interested in. The main struggle was that the citation for the individual would cost 3.50 quid and the large complete files were free. Everytime I went to the checkout the non-free one was on my payment page and I couldn't get past it.

Of course, I finally worked out that I had to delete that choice and then a link to the freebies would be emailed to me. I was able to download the freebies at work (shush!) due to my pathetic internet connection at home.

Anyhoo, the (free) system works - it just took a bit of effort for a first timer

    cheers

See below for updated version of the spreadsheet which now includes file sizes and number of pages. [I just copied them before anyone thinks I took the time to count them myself ;)]

This should give a clue as to perhaps which file might contain a particular citation ... yet to be completed are the Gazette dates which should also help those who want quicker access to specific recommendations. The LG dates are always on the result page for an individual search.

For those of you, who like me, are going through the majority of the files, I've added a column to tick and also one for notes and added excel format.

    Di,

Very many thanks for the Excel version and the LG dates. I did tinker with converting the pdf tables into xls but it proved a major pain. I can appreciate how much work went into it.

How's the name and award index coming on????

Thanks Andrew, I thought the excel format might be handier to the more methodical of us. I will fill in all the LG dates as and when I can.
