Do you know if say the 8th Army would have kept records or stats of crime commited by their soldiers? Also, where are the Judge Advocat branch's files that deal with Court Martials?
I think you maybe mistaking me for an expert? My Mrs's just converts online files by the series to Excel and I post them on here for members to browse through which can make looking for something easier than using the national archives online search engine. Perhaps you could download the North Africa spreadsheets and look through them? Regards Andy
By the way the offer is still open to convert any series to Excel if you post the WO/ADM/Air ref etc below. Cheers Andy
Perhaps you should go for Lottery Funding to pay for some of those trips...! Excellent resources - Taing to you both... (I almost feel guilty living so close to Kew... only almost, mind you...)
View attachment 49080 View attachment 49083 View attachment 49084 Looking at the set up, you would need to know the date of the hearing etc and then I suspect there will be a list of names in alphabetical order within a box. Not one to easily search unless you have the persons service records I suspect. Cheers Andy
Andrea's current project is the 140,000 PoW questionnaires in W0 344. If anyone is interested in any other series of files, Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force or any other WW2 related series like Cabinet Files etc, drop me a PM with the series/file number and I'll add it to the list. Cheers Andy Hi Andrea, how far have you got with this project on the WO 344? How are they listed? If they are listed by regiment and battalion, have you done the Scots Fusiliers yet? thanks for the WO lists they are marvellous! Iain
She's not started on them yet Iain as her main focus is studying for a Masters amongst everything else. I put a hold on doing any of the other files to in the hope Lee's SE will expand from unit war diaries in time. A
Over a 1,000 new files released. At first glimpse they look like they contain a bit of something for everyone especially the Far East. View attachment WO 361 Missing Persons.xls Remember 'Control Key and F' allows you to word search for units in Excel
Worth a look-I've found some interesting BEF files to add to my 'to copy list' View attachment WO 106 Directorate of Military Operations and Military Intelligence.xls
Andrea is currently on a mission to upload around 43 PoW related file series onto Excel for the forum covering the Army, Air Force, Navy, Merchant Navy and Civilians that were also detained during WW2. If you come across any other series ref numbers not listed that are not POW related that you think might be of interest, post the code on here and I'll get it converted to Excel. I find searching for files this way far easier than any other especially if there are spelling mistakes or incorrectly named files that will not show up on search engines-I have found over 50 1940 BEF related files this way I would never have found and many (looking at the condition of the file) have never been viewed before.
Thanks for all of these wonderful files Andy. If you come across any Series you want doing or think they will be of interest (I find them in the back of books) let me know and I'll get them on Excel mate. I've got some Far East PoW related ones coming up soon including reports (I think) on Hospitals run by the Japanese.
