It was said by the American experts that the M1 was the rifle that won the war, along with the bazooka, jeep and the proximity fuse.
There is a lot of talk about the M1 that it had a flaw. I heard this from many sources. The flaw in question was that after the eight round was fired that the cartridge case was ejected making a pinging noise. Alowing the enemy to close in. That is all bull crap In the hands of a good rifleman, this was no problem.. What we did was to keep a couple of cartridge at ready,so we would not have to dig in our cartridge belts . After the cartridge case was ejected, the breech remained open. In a matter of three seconds we were ready to fire again. So if the enemy was to attack. Then he had better do it within 3 seconds or be a dead man

    Franek,
One of the great things about WWtalk is that we are able to discuss rifles without the nationistic willy waving that normally goes with the subject, and yes the ping myth was pretty much laughed at. With the general noise of battle any Jerry that can detect a ping of a metal spring must have very good hearing indeed. Anyone who has a heard a full; power rifle go off would know the ping is pretty quiet in comparsion. Another myth thats often aired is that the rifle cant be partially reloaded and I think this one comes from Video games like Medal of honour and my understanding is that the whole (partially used) clip is simply ejected and a new put in. Id love to have a go, my friend in Virginia has amate with a Garand, I must get myself over.

I think the general opinion of the board was that the M1 was problably the best full power rifle of the war.

Yes, the clip makes a ringing noise when ejected after the eighth round is fired. If it lands on a stone, it makes a second ring. I've fired many a Garand rifle - a friend owns five or six of them - at the local rifle range, and don't see how the noise would matter in combat.

The ONLY complaint about that rifle that I've ever heard from WWII or Korean War veterans concerns its weight.

One of the veterans who posts at WW2F said the sound of the clip was not a problem. He said the problem was squatting down and putting your knee on it after it landed on the ground.
