Interesting pictures taken by the then Liverpool and Bootle Police during the Blitz. The WW2 Blitz | Merseyside Police So many years later it is hard to comprehend the damage and loss of life throughout the country. My uncle served with the Liverpool and Bootle police during the Blitz. He remained with the police after the war and I think he achieved the rank of Chief Superintendent. Diane
Hi Great pics. Dad's RAOC unit was sent to Liverpool during the blitz to act as fire watch keepers. Many of his friends died on in the bombing. He never talked about it. I found this out when I got his service record. More info here: Liverpool Blitz Gus
Hi, Thanks for sharing. Just a point of clarity - L&B Constabulary wasn’t created until 1967. During the war they were separate Police forces - Liverpool City & Bootle County Borough Steve
A remarkable file of pictures - it makes you wonder how people ever coped. My father's Army battalion, 7th Loyals, was based in Liverpool on anti-invasion duties from September 1940 to February 1941 and was frequently called on to help with fire and rescue work during the Blitz. One soldier was killed in the bombing. Just a note about the video. In Section 1, the third picture is not of the Liverpool Blitz. It was taken around 1900 during slum clearance work across the Mersey in Birkenhead.
A wonderful archive of images. Brings home the perspective that the bombing by the Germans did not just effect London.
With a bit of patience and access to Google Street View, if the areas haven't changed too much it might be possible to identify some locations using the raid reports in the diary of 33 AA Brigade. This might work better for those pictures that show damage to 1930s style houses that are likely to have been repaired.
Bootle was the “most bombed Borough” - as opposed to City - during WW2. My late mother in law was injured as a child in the 1941 May Blitz in the Kirkdale area of Liverpool that borders Bootle Borough. Some older members may remember the Liverpool Comedian Stan Boardman who always joked about “The Germans bombed our Chip Shop” - this article contains his recollection of the May Blitz and how it impacted on his family. My mum was from Bootle and lived through the Blitz, while my dad was over in N. Africa and Italy. It must have been terrifying.
