    Under siege: The Kitchen Front

The recipe for Connaught Pie is reminiscent of some of the things that Mum used to cook in the late 40s early 50s when rationing was still in force. Pouring a cheese sauce over and grilling seemed to cover a multitude of culinary atrocities. Fortunately Gran lived in the country so we used to get things like home cured bacon, a hare or two etc from time to time.

Strange how rationing continues to haunt. As a child in the 1950s, I broke an egg and my mother was exceedingly cross with me. Years later, I shudder if I ever drop one, and wait for the telling off.
