So its still going on now? The Eastern Front is irrelevant only for the tying down of the troops!!! ;)This is really getting ridiculous. Logic eh? Right well logic dictates that by the very number of units and men in the East, it was a bigger campaign. Logic dictates that by size alone the East makes the West look like a sideshow and no disrespect to Sapper or Gerry or any other Veteran.

I am getting fed up listening to a person who is so anti-russian that it clouds his thinking.
Honestly if anyone logs on here and reads those sort of posts they will be completely missled about the campaign.

First of all, we didn't go begging the Russians for help, they came to us. As a matter of fact, they were in bed with Hitler when he turned on them. They had scum bagged Britain even before the war started. The Germans could out produce the Russians in equipment and supplies quality and quantity. The Russians couldn't even feed themselves. It was also the P-39s that we “gave” them in the lend lease program that allowed them to cut the Sixth Armies supply lines at Stalingrad and keep the whole thing from imploding as well as shut down the other armies. They were using freaking “ratas”, that’s how backward and behind the technology curve they were.

They had no bombers except for the one they stole when they "captured" the American pilots that had to land their in an emergency after bombing Berlin and then these POS imprisoned them and then having the audacity to charge the US storage fees after the war. They might have gotten a bomber from shooting down the one in the Pacific that was dropping supplies to the villagers. That was quite an incident. They could have had more bombers but they would not allow the US to land its planes there to refuel but made them come back through the same flak and fighter cover they went through to bomb this target that Russia more than anyone in WWII needed bombed.

The Russians killed more Jews than Hitler, not just in the “Doctor’s Plot” but in an expanded version of it. Why it is not called the Holocaust in Russia, I cannot figure. Go read about your buddies some time. You might not think they are so nifty.

You can’t deny that the Russians ran their men in human waves at the enemy. It was a heavily used technique for them. It involved their commissar holding a gun (a gun they could be using) at men they are forcing to charge the machine gun nests and if they go forward they die by the enemy if the go back they will die by…their…friends? Comrades? Leaders? (I already used enemy in the contrast!) .

In addition your heroes had a standing order to rape all of the women and little girls in Berlin that stayed behind.

But the disregard for humanity was not restricted to their enemies as their enemies and their own people are equally despised.

Let me guess, the desire to starve to death the people of Berlin was just Russia’s way of saying the Germans needed to lose some weight.

The German front in twice as dense on the western front than on the eastern front. The Germans were spread out over 2500 miles there 4 times as long with only twice as many divisions. It is the density of the front that determines its severity, not the number of men and equipment total.

If Hitler was right about any of his reasons for going to war with Russia it was that the greed and misery that Communism breeds, would cause Russia to try to consume all of continental Europe.

If the US had withdrawn from Europe and not have developed NATO, then all of Europe would be communist today including our beloved British cousins. Russia is a nation alien to the concept of mercy.

If the US had not laughed in the face of the Russian ambassador that carried Russia’s message to give up Japan and clear out, then Japan would be communist today.

The Russian gulags were every bit as bad as German concentration camps. They simply used starvation and disease to kill just like the SS. Relatively few German soldiers ever made it back when their “sentence” was up.

The fact is that the Russians were not better than the Nazis and their armies than the SS except that the SS at least knew how to fight and at least respected and were loyal their own. I am afraid someone will read your posts and be misled into thinking that Russia possessed at least one virtue to justify your appreciation of them. It’s funny. If I say something critical about Nazi’s or the SS you give me an “amen” but if I say something about Russian’s (especially quoting history) then you go into a tizzy.

In 1948 your honoree Stalin decided it was time to kill some more Jews (he had gotten behind in his quota). This was what was called the “second Holocaust”. It was meant to finish what Hitler started but it ceased after he died in 1953. In their numbers they were too hard to completely kill so he sent many of them to Siberia to wait until he could get around to them.

After Stalin’s death the Russians published over a million pamphlets entitled “Why the Jews Must Be Resettled from the Industrial Regions of the Country”. Hitler would have been so pleased to know his work was being carried on.

BTW: If I started a thread of which WWII dictator hated the Jews the most, who do you think would win; Hitler or Stalin? Maybe what I should do is post a question “What is the measuring stick you use to determine an Ally?”.

I think that’s enough for now as I don’t want bore you with more. I will dwell on your suggestion that I am being “too hard” on our buddies from the motherland. I am still waiting hear of Russian virtue from you. Making good vodka doesn’t count nor do those nice furry hats they wear (though I have to admit, they would be nice in the winter). You better schedule some vacation time because you are going to be searching for a while. But until you find some virtue worth praising them for, I am going to continue to “call a spade a spade”. At least I didn't claim that an iron curtain had descended over Europe like that silly British fellow with his funny quips. Now that was over the line! No, I think irrelevant was fair. They were an army without skills, without honor, and highly overrated. They would just as soon have killed you as not. The more friendly you were, the more they exploited you. Be glad you were not their buddies then.

If all that balls was the punchline then it really wasn't very funny.
    Human waves heavily used??
    Standing orders to rape???
    etc.etc.
(I like the odd bit of Sven Hassel too but i didn't think he was a primary source)
I was trying not to comment either as PP held the fort of sanity..
    but.
    well.
    really.
The Perrier award goes elsehere this year.

    Jimbo,

Forgive most of us Western Europeans. We have happily forgotten the debt we owe the US for WWII and, above all, for keeping the ruskies out of our homes. Now we have turned against you, but only in speech of course, our specialty!

You may be wrong about the capacity of air power to destroy whole units, but are not wrong in regards to the eastern front. Yet, even if you were, you would not deserve for it the insults you are receiving.

If only our knowledge of history could equal the size of our mouths!

So yes, guys, now there are two clowns in this thread, and one happens not to be a yank... just one of the ever-dwindliing number of even-minded Europeans who know history and have the heart to be grateful.

    So, Jimbo-despisers, despise me, too...

Misinterpretation here mate., I stand Grateful to the US and all that she did, I'll argue with anti-americanism if it denigrates their magnificent role in the war. They didn't have to come, they chose and i'll always be grateful to that generation for that.
I'm also fully aware of Stalin and many of his boys disgraceful behaviour both politically and militarily pre and post war. The man probably stands even lower than Hitler for me.
This particular argument for me stems from a comment that the eastern front was "a relatively meaningless tie up of German troops" in another thread.
Everything in truth is a hundred shades of grey, very rarely a solid polarity and if too many "This is so" or "that is so" type comments are made with nothing being offered to back them up other than perhaps the odd Wikepedia article or Generals memoirs (notoriously biased no matter who's) then peoples backs are going to be put up. Sweeping generalisations are a poison for History and do nothing other than throw a cloud over the Devil of truth that often lies in the details.
