    Hi all.

Not sure if this is in the right section, feel free to move it.

Ok in Liverpool there is an old Barracks called The Grange, On Edge Lane Drive.

Im going up to get some pics in a bit.

The back of the barracks is way older than the front.

I have tried google for info on the barracks but not much coming up. It was a TA centre until a few years back and the Liverpool Scottish regiment Museum was housed here until 2008. It looks empty now but I am told it is a Grade 2 listed building? So it should be saved.

I want to ask if anyone knows who operated out of here during WW2, it must have been used then. I think the back part is that old it may have been in use during WW1?

I found this but no idea of what years? 59th (4th West Lancashire) Medium Brigade, R.A. (T.A.) HQ, 233rd, 234th (Howitzer), 235th, 236th (Howitzer) (West Lancashire) Medium Btys: HQ The Grange, Edge Lane, Liverpool
    Cheers

    Ant

    Found this

59th (4th West Lancashire) Medium Brigade, R.A. (T.A.) HQ, 233rd, 234th (Howitzer), 235th, 236th (Howitzer) (West Lancashire) Medium Btys: HQ The Grange, Edge Lane, Liverpool

Previously part of the Royal Garrison Artillery, this Territorial Army unit was based at The Grange, Edge Lane, Liverpool. It served with the British Expeditionary Force in France in 1940, and then served in North West Europe in 1944 and 1945

I'm not local, Ant, but have taken a quick peek online - assuming you mean the TA Centre on the corner of Botanic Rd just across from Wavertree Pk & Botanic Gdns ...
[*]Nor can I find any reference to it as 'a barracks' - which I take to imply living accommodation
    [*]Early timeline:
    • 1891 1:500 Town Plan* shows an early "The Grange" with an ornamental garden where the older part of the TA Centre now stands
    • 1894 Kelly's Directory pp 47 & 48 lists no military presence at The Grange
    • 1900 Gore's directory p2052 lists "4th L.V.A.-(Position Artillery). Headquarters, The Grange, Edge lane."
    • 1908 1:2,500 OS map* shows "Drill Hall" well-detached behind "The Grange"
    • 1927 1:2,500 OS map* - as 1908 (only in a newer mapping style)
    • 1937 TA recruitment poster lists "59th (4th W. Lancs.) Med. Bde. R.A." ... "Edge Lane, 7"
    • WW2 when I'd expect Home Guard to be based there
    • 1955 1:2,500 OS map* shows one bigger "Drill Hall" - The Grange gone and replaced by the current front extension
    • 1970 1:2,500 OS map* - as 1955 (only in a newer mapping style)

[*]Trivia: Liverpool defences in PastScape (English Heritage National Monuments Record)
