Rob, I am certainly watching the bugger...
Obvious troublemaker I reckon, and we wouldn't want this to happen to anyone's nice shiny Yamaha... would we?

    Andy,
Very nice pair of wheels if I may say so. Only ever had Hondas myself :D

I think I may have seriously damaged my health with a large capacity bike!

I now stick to 4 wheels!

    Regards

    Drew -
Spud bashing for a week my lad - this is one of the early marks - MK2 I think - must have had a good driver to get that far into town over the sea wall etc - that "wheel" is the idling sprocket - driving sprocket to the rear to be near the final drive gear box - they were tough Tanks...
    Cheers

umph:unsure: I thought you were still talking about the bike:D.

The tank is a Churchill MkIII (6pdr) called Bert,:rolleyes:obviously of the 14th Can. Tank the Calgary Rgt.

Of the 29 that landed on 19-08-44, 14 cleared the sea wall, 1 was blown back off the Sea wall by intense fire. 5 were knocked out due to various causes on the promenade. The other 9 returned to the Beach as their ammunition depleted.

Only 2 men of the regiment who landed were evacuted as wounded.

I would recomend Dieppe through the Lens by Hugh G Henry and Jean Paul Pallud, The photo are brilliant as are much of the information, I do have reservations regarding the conclusions both major and minor in the text.

It's when they talk about rear sprockets I can't work out whether it's tanks or bikes.

Of course there were flamethrowers at Dieppe, but only one called "BOAR" got onto the promenade having lost its flame fuel tank during a heavy landing off the LCT that had lost its ramp. Possibly if it had been intact the Casino Strongpoint would have been induced to surrender.

So it might be a stretch but Dieppe is part of the FT thread I suppose- anyway I like the Canadian stuff alot more than bikes.:)

About time Yamaha made a decent looking (I said looking) bike. Us Honda & Suzuki riders (I rode both makes) always thought that Yamahas were rubbish back we used to ride. Ooops, I'm in trouble now.:icon_smile_blackeye

    Robert,

Looks like we are all up the Creek without a paddle! We will just have to keep looking over our shoulders! (The Lifesaver).

It certainly was a cramped environment. Mind you, I'd rather be inside than facing it!

interesting shots of the Churchill crocodile - all we had in Italy were the Mark 1V's with the 6 pounder until around July of '44 when we got three MkV's with the 95.mm. petard -for the whole regiment ! then after January '45 - the 25th Tank Bde was broken up for spares and the 51st RTR were allocated a new role in the Armoured/Engineers unit with Crocodile and Facines - Arks - and other funnies which they used in the final battles in the spring of '45- the North Irish Horse of Gerry's moved over to 21st Tank bde to take our place as we were a territorial unit and supplied other regualr units with manpower as we were running out at that time.

We never felt claustraphobic - just part of the deal - one other thing we had which was different - a Canadian who was tired of trying to get our attention by knocking on the sides of the Turret - came up with an ordinary hand held phone which was welded to the rear plates and hooked into the inter-com of the 19 set - this was atremendous improvement in us getting rid of the pesky machine guns which bothered the Infantry - also alerted us to the Panthers and Tigers around - so we could run back to Naples !

    Cheers

Tom thanks for that. Most interesting. A tank site has just been posted by Paeschendaele Baby (nice one) and there is a picture of a Churchill with a 95mm on it. Is this the MkV you mentioned, that you were given 3 of? Scroll down the page to find it.
