The book is by John Boyne and is better than the film I think. The film omits key moments from the book.

I must say that this is one story that will linger with you a very long time...

Lines may divide us, but hope will unite us ...Nine-year-old Bruno knows nothing of the Final Solution and the Holocaust. He is oblivious to the appalling cruelties being inflicted on the people of Europe by his country. All he knows is that he has been moved from a comfortable home in Berlin to a house in a desolate area where there is nothing to do and no one to play with. Until he meets Shmuel, a boy who lives a strange parallel existence on the other side of the adjoining wire fence and who, like the other people there, wears a uniform of striped pyjamas. Bruno's friendship with Shmuel will take him from innocence to revelation. And in exploring what he is unwittingly a part of, he will inevitably become subsumed by the terrible process.

I read that book a few years ago, but I am still waiting to watch the movie, looks like it will be a really good one, surprised it wasnt mentioned earlier...

I haven't read the book but I've heard mixed things about the movie, more specifically out of the 4 friends who saw it 1 loved it, 1 was mixed, and 2 hated it. I personally haven't seen it so I can't comment.

The picture has been shown a couple of times recently on German TV channels and I watched it.

I found it to be a completely different way of expressing the holocaust, but non the less very effective with a tragic end.

The film somehow affects me less than the book did. I was reading it and suddenly realised what was going to happen and I kept on thinking, god I hope it's not THAT and it was and I nearly cried on an overful bus after reading the final pages.

It works on a LOT of levels I think. It's a children's story but it has a very high impact on adults I find. Well it had a great impact on me that's for sure!

Has anyone seen the movie, or even read the book "The boy in the Striped Pyjamas?" I just recently finished watching the movie, and it was very sad. I would really encourage everyone to watch that movie. If anyone has seen the book, can you tell me how it is?

Just watched it, quite liked it, glad it had that ending.
    Very under-stated film.

My eldest is reading the book at the moment as part of his school curriculum and it has led to some pretty intense conversations.

I saw the film a few times on Sky and whilst I didn't hate it, I wasn't all that fussed on it either. Still, anything which provokes a discussion or curiousity about the subject can't be bad. Really must grab my husband's copy of the book and read it when I have some spare time and see how it compares to the film.
