    1.8.8 Bristol Raid 6/12/40

Raids on Birmingham and Plymouth followed, but on the night of December 6th Bristol's third large raid within a fortnight took place, some 67 crews claiming to have bombed the city with 77.5 tonnes of H.E.'s, half a tonne of Oil Bombs and 5688 I.B's, between 19.20 and 22.45 hrs. This was smaller scale effort than the previous two attacks on Bristol as gale force west to north-west winds on the Continent had restricted the activity of the bomber force, and once again the attack was compressed in time.

Lt Beadles visit to his pre war Flat in Regent Square in May1941.

I broke my journey for a couple of hours to survey the damage around St Pancras and Soho. I walked all the way visiting Regent Square amongst other places.
The old “Crow’s Nest” (29 Regent Square) is a sorry sight now. A bomb has blown a huge hole in that corner of the square and half of my old room is missing.
The whole of the house next door is just an empty space, with here and there a hanging festoon of slats and plaster, the sooty channel of a dissected chimney,
or the blank rude looking wallpaper on a wall which has had its three fellows parted from it. Further down the block another great hole gapes in the building
and further down still there has been a fire.
Often in the rumours of 1937-38 I used to sit up there and think “how much will be left of Regent Square when the bombs start to fall on Kings Cross ?"
I saw the answer or part of it on Wednesday.
St Pancras Station has a large hole in the permanent way about 20 yards from the buffers, right next to the news stall. It has blown the sheet steel floor of the station into a very fine imitation of a Water Lilly. This looks as though it will take a long time to mend, though they may be able to use the platforms beyond the hole.
Kings Cross was similarly treated. Piccadilly has had several big bites taken out of it and I imagine a lot of the obvious fire damage and in Soho there are immense holes amongst all those packed streets. But all the Spanish, French, Chinese and Indian restaurants are still going strong and open to customers. I had a lunch at my old friend “The Shanghai” the chop-suey there seemed as good and varied as ever.
