I own this movie and its actually pretty good. Sure the invasion sequences are kinda crapy, but all togather its not too bad. I am wondering what any of you think about it? Hit'em hard and hit'em fast till they hope you don't come back -Thunderbolt47
I'd say it was so so. My Dad was in the Big Red One at the end of the war, though he never fired his weapon. He liked the movie, but I think it was mainly because it was about his old unit. There are a number of things that really stretch coincidence, that Marvin's character had the exact thing happen to him on the last day of World War I and World War II, that the same German Sergent fought against the unit from North Africa to Germany, etc. I can't believe that a soldier like Mark Hammil's character, one that was proved over and over to not want to use his weapon, would be kept in a combat unit all the time. Personally I don't like movies that use any old tank they can find, like Israeli Shermans, to portray German tanks, or having Germans speaking English. It's not my favorite WWII movie, though I've watched it many times when nothing better is on. I'd give it no better than a 5 on a scale of one to ten, ten being best.
I always thought the movie made Lee Marvin out to be the oldest three-stripped Sergeant in history. Overall, I thought it wasn't bad. There have been much worse. Question: There is a scene where they are at a concentration camp. Did the 1st liberate one? I never seen a source. P.S.>> halfyank, love your signature. One of my favorites.
