Wonderful effort from the Ugandan. I've never really watched a marathon so intently before. The crowd were the winners once again, what great participation.

I see the Ruskies are putting a late charge re the medal table, but too late comrades, too late!:D

    • Painters Peter Cundill (left) and Brian Purchon give the kiosk its metallic makeover
The classic K6 kiosk being painted is in Market Place and the first coat of gold was applied by 8am.
Royal Mail staff will also paint a post box gold to celebrate Luke's success after releasing a special Olympic stamp featuring Luke.
The mail box outside the PostOffice branch at 284 Hessle Road will be given a new gold lick of paint this afternoon.

Not quite a gold postbox yet but here is the telephone kiosk painted gold;)

The tops of pillar boxes haven't been anything like that shade since they were painted with gas detector paint in 1940 !:)

Let's hope that no stupid metal thief thinks they're bronze or there'll be nowhere to post a letter soon !

Not quite over, Ron. Samantha Murray is about to go in the final stage of the modern pentathlon. No guarantees, but she's in with a chance.

Didn't quite get the opening part of the ceremony, those newspaper wrapped cars etc and in the end it was just a rock concert, but it seemed to go down well.
I could hear the fireworks from Hornchurch but couldn't see them.

Overall I thought the London games were fabulous, largely due to the volunteers and the Armed Forces draughted in at short notice.
    Oh, and the athletes too!

The weather helped a bit - not too much rain for once.

    Good luck Rio.

I have to confess that I did doubt that London (or GB) could do a worthwhile job at these Games.
I was knocked back by the Opening Ceremony and was buoyed by the success of ALL our athletes in whatever discipline. Putting your life on hold for at least 4 years is a dedication I thought long gone on these shores.

I have to say that EVERYONE involved in these Olympics in London deserve my highest praise, from Gamesmakers to everyone involved with each Team GB competitor, I thank you.

Please will the DHSS now make mandatory that to get ANY payment the under 25's have to show that they have improved on their time the week before (even if it is their time shopping at the supermarket!)

I wonder what non-UK viewers thought about Batman and Robin climbing out of a destroyed yellow 3-wheeled car?

    In conclusion:

    Well done everyone !!!! :)

To give this thread a WW2 context, the closure of the Olympics reminded me that the last time I witnessed such national euphoria, encompassing a huge wave of pride and joy in simply being British, was on VE Day on the 8th of May’45
BBC - WW2 People's War - VE Day, As Seen from a Field near Venice

At even closer hand, I was present in Whitehall in London for the Victory celebrations.
    BBC - WW2 People's War - Victory Celebrations, 8th June 1946

Finally, and purely for the record, Nita & I were at Herne Hill watching the cycling events in the 1946 Olympics but I don’t remember anything like the triumphs, or even the joy, of the events that have just taken place these last two weeks.
