I am getting myself a bit confused what were the qualifications to recieve this medal? I read somewhere that it was 12 years, but then somewhere else that it was less. I have a medal group which has record of service card that starts in 39 and ends in 46. Please help clear my head The medal
Hi Kieron, I thought it was 12 years and ARRSE seems to agree with me: Twelve years' reckonable and certified service in the Territorial Army and its overseas equivalents.
Cheers Andy, the reason I was getting confused is because I am sure that I read somewhere that it was half this during WW2...do not know where I read it???
It may have been mate...It (The medal and ribbon) has changed I believe since WW2 and I think full time service has an effect or I may be thinking of regular soldiers carrying part of their service into the TA Sorry I've probably put you back where you started
Qualification information was that the recipient should be a member of the territorial army, militia,or Colonial Auxilary Forces service was 12 years with continual good conduct and had to be recommended as deserving by the appropriate commanding officer.War service and service in West Africa counted double towards the award of this medal. In all but exceptional circumstances service was to be continuous Other ranks who earned this medal then received commisions and earned The Efficiency Decoration were allowed to receive both but permitted to wear only one. Regards Verrieres Source Next door neighbour ex-territorial officer with nearly 30 yrs service and awarded both
The Territorial Army: In 1921, the Territorial Force became the Territorial Army. There was on change in the Territorial Decoration for officers, but the soldiers' Territorial Force Efficiency Medal changed its name to the Territorial Efficiency Medal. For officers, the terms of entitlement for the Decoration were reduced in 1949 from twenty years service to twelve years 'continuous efficient commissioned service' in the Force, now entitled the Territorial Army, with war service to count as double. Found it Andy in one of the Queens books I have it states War service to count as double. Cheers for your help Andy

The Territorial Efficiency Medal is no more and was replaced in 1999 by the Volunteer Reserve Service Medal to cover all three services. The award criteria are: "Reserve personnel shall be eligible for award of the VRSM after 10 years reckonable service in the Reserve Forces, provided that they have earned training bounty as required by their obligatory training commitment as defined in individual service regulations in 9 out of the 10 qualifying years. Former regular service may count as half qualifying time up to a maximum of 5 years. Complex regulations apply to the use of former service and periods of Full Time Regular Service (FTRS) as qualifying time towards the VRSM and the regulations should therefore be studied in detail. Complex regulations also apply to the transition between the former separate service reserve medals and the VRSM."
