I seem to have got it into my head somehow that the Territorial Royal Artillery badge did not have the word Ubique on it, but something else to signify a Territorial regt.. am I right in thinking this?

    Hi,

I'm happy to be corrected if wrong, but ... AFAIK, the only distinguishing characteristic of the TA uniform was the small brass letter 'T' worn on lapels and epaulettes. But these were removed when the TA was formally merged with the Regular Army in December, 1939. From that point onwards the TA for administrative purposes ceased to exist (it was not reconstituted until 1947) and there was no distinction between the uniforms of its former members and any other soldier.

The TA RA badge had a laurel in place of the word ubique above the cannon, seems to be WW1 vintage issue.

I'm new here but was once a gunner of sorts. As I understand it was the regular and Territorial Force badges that differed. I think the rationale was that the TF, i.e. pre WW1 TA, had won no battle honours and so did not warrant "Ubique". This changed after WW1 then the newly-formed, and re-named, TA took the same badge as the regular regiment, by virtue of its service in WW1.

    Hi,

Technically, that was the pre-1920 Territorial Force (TF) rather than the TA. 'Ubique' was added to the Territorial Artillery cap badge either during WWI or just afterwards, I think.

1010,%20Ceylon%20Volunteer%20Artillery.jpg Volunteer Artillery I was not aware how many variations of the RA badge there was/is from ones like the Ceylon, Hampshire garrison. HAC and many more! I remember as a kid with my collection I had one of the spinning wheel badges.

During my service with 102 Air Defence Reg, 207 Battery (Glasgow) I was issued with a horrible plastic badge, I managed to get a "real" beret badge from a dealer at the Barras! The wheel spun unlike the other bages worn by the lads. I often wondered if this was meant to spin or as a result of my beret falling off during an exercise with 15th Para, (a para stood on it). nice lads those paras.

New Zealand had two versions. Version 1 (issued to TA) had "Ubique" at the top and "Royal N. Z. Artillery" on the ribbon. Version 2 (issued to EF) had "N. Z." at the top (in place of "Ubique") and the "Quo fas et gloria ducunt" motto on the ribbon.

    No. Not broken.
My late father had one of these. While at the Sunday Times Trophy presentation at the Mansion House some b*****d stole it. He was very upset as he had had the badge for many years. They are quite rare so I understand.

( My mother has since updated me about this. He gave her the hat to hold while he had a photo taken, she went to give it back so she could have a photo taken too but he walked off. She put it down, had the photo taken and on her return she noticed the badge was missing. My mother saya she didn't know that London was sooo quiet ).

    Cheers
    Kevin
