Fascinating bit of film from the current bit of bother. The gents surrounding the Isis-owned machine are apparently Kurdish fighters, so un-threatened by being close to an isolated enemy tank that they're almost laughing at it. As the war-nerd says; they know what's going to happen. And it does. Couldn't imagine a better illustration of unsupported armour losing all potency when finding itself in the wrong place. ISIS Tank Destroyed by Kurdish YPG RPG-7 in Koban…: http://youtu.be/__Nc77Z0Sqs War Nerd article: http://pando.com/2014/10/16/the-war-nerd-nobody-could-have-predicted-islamic-states-retreat-from-kobane-except-me/ Edit: reading of doubt that this video is from Iraq. Some say Syria a while back.
good day von poop.adaministrator.today.01:45.am.re:tanks in towns,sooner be looking from this side.excellent clip.regards bernard85 :m3:
VP the very LAST thing you do with a tank is to go anywhere without Infantry- unless it's to the NAAFI… Cheers
Nice clip. Isn't there more film ? Seems to me that a (small) RPG(-7 ?) hitting the (sloped T72?) turret front top side won't do the max damage you'd like to see.
Tanks in towns is a no no unless its a Abrams or Challi. Not what they are designed for. Unfortunately the clip ends too soon for me. I'm not all that hot on armour but it looks like a T-72 to me? I'd be surprised if a RPG could destroy one of those. A T-55 or T-62 maybe. RPGs were bouncing off Warriors and Challi's in Iraq and going straight through Land Rovers without detonating, according to the Black Watch's CO's Rad Op sat in the back of a FFR
There's a few man-portable Russki AT missiles that are penetrating c.a metre of armour these days. As for the tank, I think it's a T55 variant. Chinese T59 maybe? Now pretty sure that footage is from an earlier clash. Anyway. The point. Tanks in Town, no Infantry, vulnerable: (Point at c. 5:30 onwards.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnJpZkzxWKY
I just watched a Live Link from that feed that says its a T-55. Not convinced. The footage has sound which makes me think they are not Kurds on foot but actually IS Terrorists supporting the tank.
I edited to say that it's mis-labeled, mate. See the chap with the Steyr. Rubbish at postwar sov-block stuff, but I'm settling on T59. Thought it looked too squat at first, but the film has some vertical distortion, and jazzed up T55 variants lose the rounded turret shape under all the bolted on bits.
I shall bow to you superior knowledge on all things metal. First time I've watched any footage outside of the BBC and ITV news. That's pretty raw footage in the second video when it cooks - glad I never looked in any in 2003 that I drove passed.
Yup, over a year old that footage found it on You Tube Published on 20 Aug 2013 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1BTuHNji6s
Tank in video should be a former Syrian T-55MV, version with reactive armour. Syrian Army had some 200 of these.
I imagine IS fighters are pretty short on books about Stalingrad, or Aachen, or what happens to armour in closed terrain like bocage. The thing I want to know is how long they expect all this hardware to last without basic maintainence in a gritty environment like the Syrian desert. No lack of fighters, but where are all the technical personnel coming from to keep them rolling. Still, with this example of equipment usage, I do not expect they will be needing long term maintainence.
One from series of videos taken during the fighting for Darayya, a suburb of Damascus. Majority of videos were filmed using GoPro cameras placed on turrets of tanks and IFVs. You can find on youtube more videos related to this one, I posted this mostly because at the fact that on this one its is filmed a total destruction on one the tanks by RPG-29 (at 7:28). http://youtu.be/BbHcA6mXX7o
aaaand..it's Market garden reminiscent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOuPX6z50EM dropping supplies in enemy hands ..oh boy... :indexCAXI2NHN:
another interesting hook to the above (but not worth a new poster): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62Bi3RPz_2E spiked ammo. Maybe the misdropped ammo into IS held terrain is spiked by the US ? See this youtube clip in which even in (at 1:34 sec) WW2 (said UK and germany) and Vietnam (US) the warring nations actively supplied rigged ammo. (see also at 1:55 and 2:24 ) Perhaps someone can tell more of such "programs" ?
In one of the dusty campaigns of the '60s (IIRC) the SAS introduced hand grenades with instantaneous fuses into the rebel economy. That's also made me think of a police officer's memoirs of the Malayan Emergency - he mentioned bandoliers of doctored (propellant > HE) ammunition being 'left' lying around for the CTs to pick up.
However, In open country, it does perhaps seem rather unwise to use up all your small ammunition and point a WW2 PTRD (0:33) at a T-something. What do I know though... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwOacKIkMG4
Hi, Interesting Tank vids on YouTube. Anyone else noticed the distinct lack of the dangers of "Back Blast" from the recoiless Anti-Tank weapons ? Just a thought. Regards, Mick D.
