    Thanks for posting Clive. I have literally just been reading about Lawrence and the comparisons between him and Wingate. They are in fact distantly related.

    Lawrence had in fact left the RAF as airman Shaw when he was killed in the motorcycle accident.

    I think he was one of those people who had experienced the dynamics of irregular warfare and who could not settled down to a life afterwards in the time of peace.He rejected any appointment based on his military experience and chose to live an away from the public eye.

    I remember reading an article about the family in the Sunday Times many years ago.....he came from a privileged background with a father who was brought up in a land owning family in Ireland.Of independent means. Lawrence's father at the turn of the 19th century had an income of £3000/annum making him a gentleman worthy of comfortable living.
