Some 20 years ago while helping (don't ask) one of my son's on his GCSE geography field work I came across a series of shallow craters at the back of Studland Beach (near the visitor centre) plus some live rifle ammunition dated (I think) 1942. Presumably remnants of pre-D-Day live firing exercises.

I worked on the National Nature Reserve there for three summers in 1989-72, long before the National Trust took over the whole area and tidied it up. Clearing away 20mm rounds ( presumably fired by aircraft ) from the dunes just behind the beach was a fairly regular activity ,and periodically the Army would pop by and have a little controlled explosion .in the present car park were the remains of a Sherman , and an early mark of Churchill, very much reduced to scrap.
