Yesterday I watched one of my all time favorite films "Carry on Sergeant" which was far more like the army I joined in 1980 than the one I left in 2013. The film was made at Stoughton Barracks Guilford when it was the RHQ & Depot the Queens Royal Regiment (West Surrey) a place well known to generations of infantrymen who fought in the two world wars. After the Queens Royal Surrey Regiment merged with others to become The Queens Regiment Stoughton Barracks became a pay, manning and records office where my pay slips used to come from and before some idiot decided to centralise pay in Scotland.

Anyway the barracks finally closed in the early 1990's and fell into a state of disrepair before being sold off and redeveloped into housing, retaining a number of the original barrack buildings. I found this video, on you tube, taken before redevelopment which anyone who has seen Carry on Sergeant might enjoy. As the barracks had never really been modernised it does show they type of accommodation soldiers of previous generations had to endure
