During WWII the submachine gun was the most popular weapon among the Wehrmacht and Waffen SS. Then came along the MP-44 (STG-44) and the troops liked using them on the eastern front, and during the Ardennes campaign!

    Thanks

You can't really compare these. Thus, no vote from me.

The MP38/40 was a true sub-machinegun, firing 9mm Parabellum pistol ammunition and useful at short range. You could compare it to the Sten, Thompson, or grease gun, but it was no substitute for the rifle.

The MP43/44 or StG44 was an assault rifle. It could certainly have replaced the SMGs as modern assault rifles have in military service, but it also was a replacement for the standard service rifle, firing a much more powerful cartidge, short 7.92mm, than the 9mm.

I cannot comment on how controllable this weapon was on full auto. The US M14 in 7.62mm is said to be almost impossible to contol on full auto, but the Russian AK range in short 7.62mm is OK. Anybody know?

They are different types of weapons (MP40 is an SMG while the STG44 is an assault rifle of sorts) as a result as angie99 has said you cant really compare them. As a result I have not voted either.

    Sorry I dont.

  4. For my money I would go for the assualt rifle rather than the smg. As found often after the war the 9mm bullett lacked real stopping power I think this was noticed by troops in Malaya. Whilst the stg44 may have suffered from growing pains initially it would have offered you better range and stopping power with thte option to go full auto if required. Being heavier would mean it would lack some accuracy on auto but then all guns rise the longer the burst. Short burst are better. not sure of range of stg44 but it would have out ranged the smg by a fair few yards.

    regards
    Arm.

Combat range yes. The maximum range for the short 7.92mm is much longer.

In truth, most combat shooting takes place at under 300 yards.

The AK was designed with a upwards cutout at the muzzle to direct the gases upwards and improving the controllability.

The British army hand says that the STG44 is "surprisingly accurate up to 800 yards"

Photo is of a STg44 fitted with the vampire infra red system.

the lamp on the top is a active IR which illuminates the target and the sight is a passive sight which picks up the illuminated target.

The photo appears to show a British soldier wearing WWII BD and beret, so it would probably have been taken in the 1940s. Am I right?

If so, I was not aware that IR sights existed then. Is any history on this available?

The picture is of a Int Corp officer trying out the system taken around 1945.

I do not know about rifle sights but Alfred Prices book "Instruments of Darkness" goes into detail about the aircraft mounted IR sights. it was fitted to some Me110 nightfighters!

Bernard fall in his book "Hell in a small place" about Dien bin pheu in 1954 talks about the French setting positions around the site fitted with infra red sights for the rifles.

Never having shot with either weapon, I don't feel qualified to vote. However, if I was in a certain situation where I had to choose one or the other as a personal weapon, then I think I'd go for the Sturmgewehr.

What a strange picture, Is it a shop front... THere in a street, see the reflection in the glass, I think their just unsure of something or someone approaching, the guys at the back, thek id with glasses and the driver, seem preety relaxed. The NCO (cant make out his tabs, but assume hes is my the MP40, looks a bit unsure.

    Kev,

The caption basically reads Waffen SS house to house fighting in the Warsaw uprising Aug 1944.
