Commandos' graves: Now this is getting interesting, since documenting photographer believes officials have messed up a bit. This is a part of the plaque at the entrance of the cemetery, describing the war in Norway and some chosen details: It reads: "....Other soldiers died in the Commando raid of 26th - 28th December 1941 on the Lofoten Islands...." I suspect Op Anklet (the "second" Lofoten raid) is mixed up with Op Archery at Vaagsoy/Maaloy. They both took place within the same time frame, but there were no allied casualties in Op Anklet, while in Op Archery approximately 50 allied men lost their lives. 5 named commandos and 4 unidentified soldiers with the same date of death- 27th December 1941 - have their graves within the original cemetery rectangle: Culling, William Lance Serjeant 6010289 Essex Regiment 27/12/1941 Age 22 View attachment 66080 Geear, Edward James Lance Serjant 6344312 Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment 27/12/1941 Age unkown Keast, Peter Hugh Joseph Private 5628235 Devonshire Regiment 27/12/1941 Age 25 Murray, James Gardner Private 2879691 Gordon Highlanders 27/12/1941 Age 23 View attachment 66083 Skelton, John Lance Corp 5668915 Royal Sussex Regiment 27/12/1941 Age 31 A soldier - commando 27/12/1941 View attachment 66085 A soldier 27/12/1941 A soldier 27/12/1941 View attachment 66087 A soldier 27/12/1941 One headstone seems to have been added at a later point, and when counting them all there actually are 156 headstones rather than the official 155: Front left facing cemetery View attachment 66089 Povey, Harold Thomas Andrew Lance Serjant 3309768 Black Watch / Royal Highlanders 27/12/1941 Age 29 It seems highly likely that on of the four unidentified from 27th Dec 1941 was Povey. I guess nobody could decide what unidentified -headstone could be replaced by Povey's, so now this cemetery contains 155 graves but 156 headstones.

Hi Stormy i wonder why there is 3 Navy chaps from the Ark Royal 2 who died on the same day but the other died nearly a year later ? I wondered about that, too. Then I found out that the carrier HMS "Ark Royal" (91) was very active during WW2, involved also in operations off the Norwegian coast. She survived several near misses until she was torpedoed by a German u-boat and sunk in November 1941. I believe that's a credible reason that she took casualties on several occasions.
