I would be very grateful if anyone could point me to a reliable source of information about the total number of British people who served in the British Armed Forces during the Second World War, and the total number of British non-civilians killed in the Second World War. Simon Bull
From Nicholas Hobbes Essential Militaria- UK: 6.2 million soldiers mobilized 397 762 dead 475 000 wounded 65 000 civilian dead Its no more specific than that, but hope that helps! Regards Richard
I did read that the British Army alone had 144,000 dead (excluding wounded, usually x3 greater) during 1939-45. The Navy suffered significantly more in terms of dead in WW2 than WW1; and I think 50,000 bomber crewmen were KIA/DOW. I believe the British Army reached about 2.9 million active members during the period (relying on memory), significantly fewer than in WW1. The Spartacus educational resource has the statistics available on-line, so try a google search for them. Richard
