    Hello.

I know that German halftracks and similar vehicles had numberplates and on these numberplates were official stamps in red. I've attached an example above.

I was wondering though, why are there TWO stamps on the numberplate? Was it standard practice for two stamps to be present in the June 1944 period?

My main interest is Sd.Kfz.251s of the Panzer Lehr division and 12th SS Hitlerjugend in Normandy 1944.

    Thank you for your help!

All plates, civilian and military, had to have a stamp or disk attached to show that the plate was official and checked/authorized, later on in the war military authorities were sometimes authorized to license the licenseplates for their units vehicles, too. In this case you can see a unit designation in the stamp. Two stamps were typical for motorcycles (as shown above)
The 6-digit number indicates a date pre 26.08.1941 as from this date a 7-digit sytem became common
Fun fact: official colour name for the stamps was „Kordulla-Rot“

Regarding your question in another thread: It's practically impossible to find the correct unit based on the license plates, as the corresponding documents are lost

  3. "Kordulla-Rot"...I shall remember that! :)

Thank you for the info. Do you have any idea why there were two stamps on some plates and only one on others?

Would Sd.Kfz.251s in 1944 typically have one or two stamps?

    Thanks!

Unfortunately I don't know that either, here my knowledge has holes the size of the Ngorongoro Crater ;)
Here´s some corresponding German Paperwork regarding license plates in common which might explain why I'm giving this administrative nightmare a wide berth

The above section only deals with the change of the change of the change of the change ad infinitum
