Is that the film where the wounded German getting a Iron Cross others his foot due to having no hands to be shaken by the officer?

    That was Cross of Iron,

I've seen Stalingrad and loved it! The acting isn't the best and they did get some details wrong but other than that it's a great film. I for one loved how neutral they kept it allowing them to show both the German and Russian side. Shame people called it a sympathizer film apparently.

I'd recommend the German audio/Englush subtitles version over the one that they dubbed over in English. I've heard some really bad things about it.

I watched it some time back, now it looks like it's time to get it from Netflix again. It was a very good and well made movie. Movies that are from the opposing side's viewpoint are refreshing and interesting to me. This one definitely brings the everday soldier's viewpoint to life.

Not to spoil it all for you Andy, but the Germans lose in this one....

Does anyone know who owns the distribution rights? The movie has been out of print for quite some time now, a remastering or even HD release would be really cool.

Edit: I'd also like to add, essentially all the DVD releases have been sub par, no extras or anything, hunh?!?

Tom recently sent me a copy in German - much better than the dubbed english version , even without subtitles.

I think it is a good film. Like Das Boot it has a different feel to it than British and (God forbid) Hollywood war films.

    James,
Glad you liked it even if only in German Language.
I personally thought that it was a well made film.

A great film! I found it extremely dark and cold somehow... I was really intrigued.

For those old enough to remember, how did the public react to the film? The Wiki entry claims it was treated as a "sympathizer" film but I can't find any sources to back up those claims.

Does anyone know of any similar films in the works? Seems like Cross of Iron, Das Boot, and Stalingrad were the most recognized and then it just died off.

Not sure if there are any similar films in the works but the movie of the book The Forgotten Soldier, which was due to be made by Paul Verhoeven, has been cancelled due to the financial climate with numerous backers pulling out.

Ah, I remember hearing of that movie, I didn't know it was canceled though.

I suppose " James Mason; Desert Fox " could possibly be considered the first of the 'Sympathetic' films? Or even " All Quiet on the Western Front " ~ though a tad before our time.

I don't think the genre has entirely died out, Elven. How about " Valkerie " and " The Reader " Not so 'Blood and Guts', maybe. But, 'Unsympathetic' ?

Rommel really can't be seen as a "evil" figure, he may not have been the best general but he did show compassion. The problem I have with films about Rommel is his involvement with Hitler's assassination is full of so much grey area (was he involved, how much was he involved, what did he do, etc) yet these films always paint him as a figure who played a big hand in the attempted assassination. I'm not saying he was a bad guy either, whether he supported Hitler or not, his treatment of Jews and other "undesirables", pow's, etc is not something to be scoffing at.

I've seen AQOTWF, it was really good although can't be considered a "sympathizer" film since it was WWI.

Perhaps I should have clarified, the vibe I was getting from the wiki was Nazi sympathizer not German. The article was mentioning things like war crimes and such but no references was listed which is why I am looking for reviews and such. I still have to watch Valkyrie although I doubt it can be compared to Stalingrad or Cross of Iron from what I have seen so far.

Has anyone seen Hunde, wollt ihr ewig leben? (Stalingrad: Dogs, Do You Want to Live Forever?)?
