Very impressive, what is the sword made of ?
Similar to The Statue of Liberty but more dramatic.
T34 can you post some more photos of Soviet Memorials?

What astonishing Statuary! That is one hell of a memorial.
It's got to be said that the more 'Full on' regimes the world has seen certainly paid attention to good design.

(T34, I see you are quite an early model.;) )

I recently saw an article on "Mother Russia" which said that the memorial was in need of restoration and this was planned.

Apparently there is some internal reinforcing steel which was found to be subject to corrosion.

    The sword is 95ft long.

Check out the guy at the base to get an idea of the height.

Another Motherland Statue at Kiev (below)

    Built: 1981.
Location: On top of the Great Patriotic War Museum
Notes: The figure is made of chrome nickel steel and weighs 550 tons. It is 62 metres high, but in total, including the base it stands at 102 metres! In the left hand the figure is holding shield which is decorated with the state symbol of USSR. In the right hand there is a sword which weighs 12 tons and is 16 metres long..

This is an ominous photo with Motherland taken behind a Lenin memorial.

The statue on the left is really the tomb of Marshal V.I.Chuikov, and the face of the statue is his portrait.

He is the only Marshal of the Soviet Union that is not buried on the Kremlin wall, he had the honour of being buried in the place where he earned fame as defender of Stalingrad during the siege.

Just for curiosity's sake, I was fooling around with Google Earth in Volgograd (old Stalingrad) and on the Mamayev kurgan at 48º 44' 29.99" N / 44º 32' 10.78" I was surprised to find the Motherland statue as seen on the first post here!

In response to a previous question the statue is 52m tall, concrete, and the sword is stainless steel, 27m long, to a total height of 85m. Must be a sight :)

Chuikov's monument is at the green rotunda half way to the top.
