Great painting. I will have to check this, I thought that the Lancastria had one funnel, if I'm right this is the Oronsay. As Gus says 'It is good that the Lancastria is getting some media attention'. It would be great if the whole fantastic Aerial evacuation also got some attention.

The IWM has paintings-I've posted some on my FB page and it wasn't the worst, the Wilhelm Gustloff torpedoed in 1945 by the Russians was pointed out to me a number of years ago by some good folk on here.

I remembered, when I was writing about Operation Aerial, that while they watched the attack on the Oronsay the Master of the Lancastria said to the Chief Officer something like 'glad we haven't got two funnels because that seems to be what the Luftwaffe fancies'. Drew, yes Strathaird does look like the painting, she was embarking in Brest at the time.

    Hi

The clip does state that the ship in the center of the painting isn't the Lancastria. It is the ship that picked up the survivors (Oronsay ?) and it is believed that it's captain may have commissioned the painting. And there is a ship with a single funnel seen sinking over to the right of the painting so that must be what they believe to be the Lancastria.

But it is going into the water bow first and I was always led to believe it listed over and capsized.

Even the museums own website rountree, tryon, maritime, Pears, St. Nazaire, Evacuation, oil says "An immediate list allowed the launching of only two lifeboats and, after about twenty minutes, the doomed vessel rolled over and sank."

The previously unknown painting shows the WWII attack on the Lancastria

Are we saying that the Lancastria is elsewhere in this picture, to me the title would refer to the main object of the painting which is a ship with 2 funnels.
Its a bit like saying here's a painting by John Constable, called 'The Cow Herd' and just happens to have a horse & cart (or wain) right in the middle of it, ah yes the herd are those 4 little dots in the bottom right hand corner

    Apologies

The image Sky are using on the website is only part of the picture. Here's the full one from the gallery website.

You have no need to apologise

Its the painter who should, surely in any artwork the main subject of the title is the largest part of the picture

Otherwise Leonardo could have said ' do you like my picture of the Italian countryside, it was spoilt by some grinning woman called Mona'

I agree TD it is a wierd layout.

But if it was, as it is suggested, commissioned by the captain of the ship in the foreground that may explain its focus. There was a media blackout about the Lancastria's sinking when this came out. So maybe the painter deliberately kept the Oronsay as the main focus of the painting to avoid any unwanted attention.

I wonder if a similarly painted scene depicting the RMS Carpathia with the RMS Titanic quietly slipping away in the background be as interesting (or valuable)?

    Tricky Dicky,
If you want to exercise your artistic talents, this lad needs a painting of the Empire Lance or sister (one funnel) to go on the front of a book about D-Day. Any other artists out there?

I used to quite good with a roller on the end of a man-help and I could shin up a stage rope without needing a rope ladder; but that was a long time ago!
