Does anyone know anything about the SS Auretta please? She was sunk by a landmine on Feb 26th 1945, but I would like to know in which waters and what her destination/mission was. My father was on the ship, but as he is now deceased I can not get the info from him!

    Hi curiousK8

    Welcome to the forum

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Have a look at this for starters :)

    SS Auretta [+1945] WRECK

If she's off De Panne (The chart is to small to see without subscribing), it's a shame they blew her masts. I'm in the area this w/end so could have took a picture of her for you.

    Regards
    Andy

Obviously my father's ship was not sunk by a landmine! I shouldn't talk to people while typing!!

The Auretta had been part of the eight ship unescorted Convoy TAM-91, which departed Southend on the 25th February 1945. The ship was one of two that were sunk from the covoy the following day. Her position of loss is given as 51' 24N 02' 49E. One theory is she was sunk by midget submarine. Two of her crew were killed in the explosion.

Thank you for the info. Like Harry my dad was a Hull man too, fortunately for mum (and ultimately me!) he survived, but like many others he never talked about the war unless relating funny stories. Regards, Curiousk8

    Hello and welcome,

Harry Everitt's medal file can be downloaded for £3.45 from BT 395/1/29938

His seaman's pouch is held at Kew in piece BT 372/621/79
Don't worry about the typo in his name on this file.

His CRS 10 (service record from Jan, 1941) will be held at Kew in piece BT 382/557

The pouch and CRS 10 are best obtained by visit to Kew as expensive to obtain online - Kew have just put up their prices.

    Regards
    Hugh
