Following on from another post, I thought I would ask the question.... How would you define a Special Forces unit and who were the first allied Special Force of the Second World War? I tend to stick to 1939, so have no idea whether there were defined SF units prior to Sep 1939 that would take the title. Personally, I would've thought that the definition would come under a unit with a specialised task that operate outside the normal lines of operation and structure of the regular army? Does that cover it? Just a Thursday morning ponderance...
I'm probably wrong but do the Independant Companies sent to Norway in 1940 count as Special Forces ? Independent Company - Wikipedia.
