Soviet Women and Intelligence on German-Occupied Territory, 1941–1945

A slightly different topic and not one that appears to have appeared here before. The webinar's full title is: Through Their Own Words: Soviet Women and Intelligence on German-Occupied Territory, 1941–1945.

Although official Soviet sources were largely silent about the contributions of women to Soviet intelligence during World War Two, former agents began writing and publishing about their experiences starting in the 1960s. First taking the form of autobiographical novellas and later memoirs, today these ego documents provide us with a unique source for considering the role of women in Soviet wartime operations. They shed light on the methods they used as well as the way that gender shaped their work and lived experiences. Drawing on these sources in conjunction with intelligence reports, this presentation will consider how gender impacted Soviet operations on German-occupied territory and the role of women.
