Soviet plan to invade Manchester revealed - mirror.co.uk

The Red Army knew the quickest route to Old Trafford - and they weren't planning to cheer on Manchester United.
This detailed map, compiled by the Soviet Union in 1974 at the height of the Cold War, reveals their plans to invade Britain's industrial heartland.
It details the main arteries into Manchester and the roads wide enough for tanks - all in Russian script.
Colours are used to denote targets, black for industrial sites, green for military ones and purple for public buildings.
Nikolai Podgorny was head of state at the time that this eerily meticulous city street guide was compiled for Red Army high command using information from spy planes, satellites and KGB spies.

From my childhood memory of 1970s Mancunia it could have done with some columns of T64s on the high street... would have raised the tone somewhat .

I assume in the period the soviets would have been striking north-westwards from the willing collaborationist strongpoint of the People's Republic of South Yorkshire? :D

I think they'd have run up against it once they hit Moss Sidegrad! Heavily armed civilian population ..... :p

If the Soviets planned to attack from the west (Liverpool) they wouldn't have made it onto the East Lancs Road before having their tank tracks nicked!

Great read, although I assume Britain, The United States, etc probably had maps outlining a invasion of Moscow and the like.

Not sure why but I am suddenly reminded of that "The Simpson's" episode where Homer steals a nuclear sub and the world finds out Russia is a front that the Soviet Union used to trick the world for an invasion!

Manchester eh ? If only they'd asked, we'd have arranged a quick referendum down south and given it to them !:)

As I said - 'The People's Republic of South Yorkshire'...

This reminds me of a phrase Edward Carson and the Unionists used to put on their placards in Ireland around 1913 HOME RULE IS ROME RULE!!!

look on the bright side. if they landed in London it would probably be in the middle of a tube strike and they wouldn't have the correct currency to take a cab, plus the cabbie would be telling them how he had spent time in the russian army with his brother in law but left cause he could make more money on teh hackney scene

also tehy woudhave to move north then cause cabbies dont go south of the river

if they did land in manchester at least the police would get a breather from the locals. god elp em if teh derbys on. teh fans would destroy teh russians and then each other

Yeah. The Russians would've probably gotten their asses handed to them in the first pub they visited after a Newcastle win over Manchester by 3-0. Imagine the poor Russian soldier who entered THAT scenario. Stalingrad X1000 I say.

During those scenarios, what language would they adopt? Geordie or English?

Probably a language all could speak. Drunkanese. Both Russians and Mankies are quite fluent in that ^^
