I came across this 2008 article today: 'Zimbabwean Second World War VC Connections' by R.J. Challis, in 'Heritage of Zimbabwe', the journal of the History Society of Zimbabwe. See: https://www.history.co.zw/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/H27-with-cover.pdf

    The opening passage:
    Probably a unique experience:
Nicholls was serving in the Grenadier Guards on 21/5/1940, in Belgium.

Eric Wilson was an Acting Captain with the Somaliland Camel Corps, when Italy attacked in 1940.

Major General Charles “Jock” Campbell, whilst commanding some Rhodesians in North Africa, died in an accident.

Squadron Leader (later Wing Commander) John Dering Nettleton, was a South African, died in a bombing raid in 1942 on Augsburg; many of his crew were Rhodesians.

Lieutenant (later Captain) Gerard Ross Norton, born in South Africa, gained his medal for action with the Royal Hampshire Regiment in Italy, he died in Zimbabwe.

    Lest we forget.
