Never forget these times....a prelude to what had occurred on the continent which had also suffered from the effects of "the bomber will always get through"

I have never been comfortable with the tabloid figure of 600 deaths for this tragic event - and even the 'official figure', banded around, of 75 (or 77 depending on which account is used) is often disputed. The so-called evidence, recently uncovered at the N/A (according to recent press), is very sketchy.

It is also rare for me to ever question Clive's research/data - but the above list, in my mind, is questionable. Look at Walter Lord for example, who died at Customs House (and not at the school?). Search the CWGC, using Hallsville School, and you will find 75 casualties. But search on Agate Street and you will find another one or two casualties, such as Frederick Driver (mentioned by Clive, above).

The other issue is that more than one bomb fell in Hallsville Road - number 25 took a direct hit and casualties are recorded there. Some have taken these casualties and added them to the school total. I think they should be kept separate....

Look at the GRO register for deaths and you will soon find more disparities - only one recorded death certificate for the Newman-Death family, for example.

I can certainly add one more death, as certain (and not recorded on the CWGC register), for Hallsville School - 2 year old Olly J Glitz (aka Olive Glitz and aka Olley Glitz). I will look for further deaths which can/may be attributed to this incident.

Please add 84 year old Frederick Palmer of 9 Cranleigh Road. Suffering from shock, he was taken to Whipps Cross Hospital (along with a large number of wounded from Hallsville School). He was transferred to Staines Hospital and died a few weeks later. He is NOT on the CWGC. Possibly his medical complications were not attributed to enemy action....?

Most of the Newman-Death family were never recovered from the site and classified as Presumed Dead. Death certificates were mostly issued as [Forename] N Death. Search 'Death' using FreeBMD.

Am I the only one to be chilled at the thought of the new school being built on the same site?

My mother's family who lived there, always said that many who wanted to disappear used this dreadful tragedy as the means to do so.

My wife has recently inherited the diary of a relative. This has not seen the light of day for many years until last year. He was an Air Raid Warden on duty throughout that night in Canning town near to the school. He was aware of the numbers of people sheltering in the school that night. He states "The school was sheltering just over three hundred people, who had lost their homes in the previous raids". He later states, "A fleet of buses had been detailed to collect these people and take them to a safety area. The buses should have arrived one Tuesday, but never showed up. It was on Tuesday night that the school was hit and three hundred people were killed by the land mine", and later " What happened was, that the fleet of buses, that should have arrived had gone, in mistake to Camden Town, instead of Canning Town and so had decided to leave it until the next day, with the result I have mentioned". Joe Wetherall and I were two of the wardens on duty at that time and were helping to put a cordon round teh school, we had just finished, on this early Wednesday morning, when the fleet of buses came into view, making for the school, but it was too late.........". Written by someone in official capacity who was there at the time.

I've also never been convinced with the claims of hundreds being killed in this incident, and it being "covered up" to the degree that there is zero documentary evidence to that effect. Obviously the idea of reporting being discouraged at the time is perfectly plausible, but not that they are not recorded by CWGC, nor by the civil death registration process, is the stuff of conspiracy theories.

It turns out that while there is a death registration (as "Due to War Operation"), it is actually annotated thus:

"Olive Jane Glitz found to be living. Letter received from Town Clerk, West Ham, dated 22nd February 1941, stating that his records have been amended accordingly."

There is, in fact, a marriage registration for "Olley J Glitz" (to Edward Batten) in Kensington in the September Quarter of 1968.
