Welcome to the forum Delores, I've edited the thread title to attract the attention of those members who can help.
Hi Delores, In the British National Archives there is a file, WO392/21, which lists many of the Allied POW's held by the Italians as of August 1943. This document is known to contain errors, but your father is listed in the file as being in Camp 85 at that time, which was located at Tuturano, near Brindisi. I have cropped the page for you and attached it here: If the L.J.J. Labuschagne shown is your father, then his service number was 36068. Hope this helps. Others on the forum will hopefully know more. Steve
Hi thank you. So where do i go from here. To get his full names. To see if it is him. Gunner I see. Which I believe is right.
Hi Delores, Another forum member, jacksun has compiled an excellent thread explaining how to apply for a POW's service records from the International Red Cross and in your case the South African Service personnel records. Please see the link here and scroll down to the relevant sections: http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/43535-ww2-soldier-research-tips-and-links-for-new-researchers/
Hi Delores Things have changed slightly and applications for service records for SA servicemen can be requested via e-mail sandfdoc@mweb.co.za I think this is because of the sorry state of our postal service. They don't require any certificates but of course you must give them as much information about your father as you can i.e. full names, date of birth, date of death and service number if you have it. They require your full address and a copy of your I.D. document or passport' I have recently applied for a serviceman's record via e-mail and the service record was e-mailed to me about 7 weeks later. Best of luck Diane
