Vassily Zaitsev was said to have killed up to 400 enemy troops during the war, most of them officers!, he is the one sniper who really sticks out in ww2 and had a film popularise his figure called 'enemy at the gates' starring jude law. Does anyone know of any other predominant snipers in ww2? paulyb102
I think the Americans had a guy on Guadalcanal who was a remarkable sniper, but I can't remember the details.
Simo Hayha, Finnish sniper of the Winter War. 542 confirmed kills. (352-362 with Mosin Nagant M28) View attachment 439
Stalingrad by Antony Beevor says that Zaitsev led the movement of sniperism in the 62nd Armybut he was not their highest scoring sniper. By the October of 1942 Zaitsev had raised his tally to 149 Germans, he was one short of his promised total of 150 for the Anniversry of the October Revolution. A sniper only known as Zikan killed 224 Germans by 20 November 1942. One of the tactics developed by Zaitsev was to put his telescopic sight on to an anti tank gun and take out German machine gun nests.
The "Winter War" was the Soviet invasion of Finland from the 30 November 1939 to the 13 March 1940, so his impressive tally was notched up in a total of around 3 and a half months.
plant-pilot are you sure that picture is Häyhä, as far as I know he only used open sight M28. Also the actual kill figures are probably higher since he didn't keep personal record of kills untill after few weeks as sniper. Also the 500+ kills does not include kills that he made with smg and mg, before coming a sniper. He also was wounded 1 week before the end of war, so the kills came from a time of less than 3 months.
WWII Top Scoring Snipers Simo Häyhä (Finland), 542 kills Iván Siródienko (USSR), 500 kills Nikolái Yakovlievich Ilín (USSR), 496 kills ? Kulbiértinov (USSR), 487 kills Mikhaíl Budiénkov (USSR), 437 kills Fiódor Malviéievich Okhlópkov (USSR), 429 kills Fiódor Diáchienko (USSR), 425 kills Vasilí Ivánovich Golosov (USSR), 422 kills Afanasi Górdienko (USSR), 417 kills Stiefan Piétrienko (USSR), 412 kills Vasilí Zaitsiev (USSR), 400 kills Sulo Kolkka (Finland), 400 kills … Mathias Hetzenhauer (Germany), 352 kills … Tania Mikhaílovna Pavlíchienko (USSR), 306 kills (top female sniper of WWII) Sepp Allerberger (Germany), 230 kills
Try http://www.snipercentral.com/ look around there, they've got plenty history over the snipers of the world. It should have some information about Vaisili. If they don't have it there, go out and buy Enemy at the Gates for DVD, It gives a bio and history over Vasili; in special features.
No problem. If you want to look up more snipers, or if you have any more questions about the snipers of WWII, just refer back to www.snipercentral.com Like I said, that gives all facts about the Current Snipers and the Previous Snipers of the world. SNIPER#7 over-and-out

[post=34249]Quoted post[/post] Enemy at the Gates should be viewed with a bit of caution. The duel between Zaitsev and Konig is almost certainly a Soviet propaganda machine product. The battle is presented accurately at the beginning, with a terrifying river crossing under air attack, but there's no mention made of the encirclement of the German 6th Army and its starved and desparate condition by the end. Oh, and there's a knocked out T34/85 in one shot. Don't tell me you didn't know they weren't introduced till about 8 months after the surrender of 6th Army.... I'd get me anorak, but it's too 'ot.... [/b] Awww, c'mon, they could've just CGI'd the right turret in and nobody'd've noticed. The late-model Panzer IIIs with the long 50s looked right, though, and I'll bet they didn't have as many of those as we saw. images/smilies/default/biggrin.gif Regards, MikB
Whoa, Thats really interesting those figures staggering to. It helped me alot as i was doing a school project on snipers.
Ive just watched "Enemy At the Gates" recently and I was quite shocked from what I saw of the russian officers you either got shot by the germans or shot by your officers great movie though I recomend it. Jack
