Can anyone date and answer a couple of questions about a S & W Pistol used by a member of the Auxiliary Units (Churchills secret British Resistance organisation).

Smith & Wesson .38 Calibre - The number is V.77076
    Some markings need clarification
"49" engraved on the left hand side near the trigger/pistol grip.
When and why was "Osterich Polizei" stamped on it? SW38 Bobs 49 Marking.JPG SW38 Bobs 49 Pistol.JPG

The Austrian Police marking was presumably done by S&W when it was made or by the Austrian Police when they brought it into service?
