Small arms sites: know any good ones?

As some of you may know I have an obsessive interest in British ordnance of 1914-1945, and small arms in particular. I am also interested in police arms in the period 1914-1960, in the United States, Britain, and the Commonwealth and colonies. I have gleaned some information all around the net, but there are myriads of gun sites out there and I am not familiar enough with all of them. Can anyone recommend some good ones that would be worth joining?
When I say 'good' I mean sites that would have the kind of accurate information (often obscure) that I need and forums (fora?) free of ranters, politics, and loonies. Larger WWII, WWI, or military sites with suitable sub-sections are also welcome.

    Thanks,
    TTH

Thank you Wills, nice stuff. Do you know a good firearms forum anywhere?

I realise that is is not specifically about the weapons as you asked, and it is certainly immodest on my part, but I have just started to build a new website on British military ammunition.

There is a lot of info out there on the internet, but it is scattered, often inaccurate and sometimes completely wrong. It is my intention to try and build an accurate site with as much info as possible in one place.

It is a big undertaking and will take a long time to complete. I have just made a start with a few calibres and am currently just beginning to put the .303 inch pages together (Don't hold your breath!). There are also headstamp details, L numbers etc which I think might be useful. There is still a lot more in the way of pictures and drawings to add even to those rounds I have already covered.

    The address is
    https://sites.google.com/site/britmilammo/home

Have a look and hopefuly it will grow over the coming weeks and months.

    Regards

An interesting start there, Tony. I expect that you will later include other standard British calibers like 7.92mm (BESA), .380 revolver, 9mm Parabellum, and 7.62mm NATO. Will you be doing anything on the 'odd' calibers used by British forces and/or made and loaded in the UK? (.38 Special, 7.63mm Mauser, .38 Super ACP, .32 ACP, 9mm Browning Long, 8mm Lebel, etc.)

I certainly will. The biggest task will be getting the .303 data loaded, as there is so much of it. I will probably do a part of that, then another calibre, a bit more .303 and so on. The order i do it depends to some extent on which calibres I have already photographed.

7.92m BESA is one of the next ones to do so should be done next week.

    Cheers

More immodesty, I'm afraid, but my website has a lot of articles and other material about military guns and ammunition, including small arms: http://www.quarry.nildram.co.uk

I also host a forum to discuss military guns and ammunition, plus a range of related and not-so-related topics (but discussion of politics, religion and global warming are banned!): http://forums.delphiforums.com/autogun/start

Tony W, you may be as immodest as you like here - I don't doubt many of us have used your rather informative pages over the years.
(Didn't you have an old profile here? Happy to dig it out and merge with the new one.)

To add to the links, I always find these chaps interesting/entertaining:

One of the best small arms sites is http://www.milsurps.com. Like many sites, it is split by weapon type. The Lee Enfield section, for example, has some of the world's leading collectors and researchers as members.

Another good multi-site is Gunboards http://forums.gunboards.com/forum.php Again, this site has some leading authorities among its members.

Thanks for the welcome! I don't think I've been on this forum before, but my memory isn't what it was..

Hmm, I may be thinking of WW2F.
    Whatever - welcome aboard!

Thanks for the recommendations, Thunderbox. I have browsed on gunboards and milsurps, and it sounds as if joining both is worth it. And welcome Tony W, I will definitely be looking at your pages as well.

Take a look at this one; -

On the right hand menu look for unrealized projects, everything from small arms to aircraft. Some of the other stuff is way off topic but interesting all the same.
