Elsie, you are not the only one who finds themselves before an audience whose eyes glaze over at the merest mention of WW2. :D

As for challenges, I too have experienced what you described, and for me nothing can beat this one. A few of us came here to learn, still learning, but when confident enough started to help others with the basics.

So hang around and muck in, it's what keeps the forum turning... and as the months go by it'll be the only place where others will get your excitement at a new discovery.

Good luck with unpicking those service records!

Too true-happens to me all the time

Elsie - I can only say one thing - we all "get it" on here and completely understand where you're coming from :)

The easiest thing is of course to never get anything wrong.

    That's what I do.

    Ohhh, wait.

    All the best

If we all knew the answers to our questions then there would not be a need for a site like this.

We only ask questions (however silly or stupid they appear to some) because we do not know the answer, and having a wide based resource as this site has, then there is the chance that someone will have that specialised knowledge we need.

Personally I do not have knowledge of specific areas, although once I have absorbed my fathers regimental war diaries enroute from Drew then maybe I will have. In the mean time I do have access to time and enjoy searching for information to solve a problem. Posting that information for someone else to then fill in gaps in their information gives me the appreciation that when I ask questions, members will do the same for me.

Another thread on the forum about draft recognition codes prompted me to look again at my father's service records to see if there was a draft code quoted on them when he was shipped to North Africa. (There wasn't by the way).

Now my story is not exactly about sloppy research, more about not noticing something until now.
I cannot tell you how many times over the past (almost) three years since I joined the forum I have looked at his records, either to clarify something or to help a member out. Has anyone actually read something a few times but not seen what they have been looking at? (if that makes sense!)

Until yesterday I never noticed that my father had been admitted to a field ambulance unit twice within a couple of weeks. Maybe it is because I am more familiar with the abbreviations now that these few entries stood out yesterday and made sense.

30 October 1943 Admitted 217 Field Ambulance and posted x2 list
2 November 1943 Taken on strength from x2 list

    8th November 1943 Admitted 152 Field Ambulance
21 November 1943 Discharged to unit

Of course I will never know what caused him to be ill, first time for 3 days then 13 days, just 6 days after the first spell.
