Very sad news, certainly a man who I greatly respected. Seems like many of the cream of the crop have passed on, Holmes, Daglish, and now Keegan. RIP.
It was with sadness that I saw this title thread. Even a few weeks ago I had read The Face of Battle again for the nth time, and my shelves are honoured by others of his as well. Thank you, Sir John.
The Face of Battle. Probably the primary reason I regard him so highly. Six Armies, Battle for History, Mask of command; all fine books, but that one's stayed with me so strongly since I first read it 20+ years ago. keegan - face of battle - AbeBooks
RIP Sir John Keegan We have lost yet another historian, his work Six Armies in Normandy is one i use a lot, the best writing I recall was a short story of how he was invited to accompany veterans to Normandy in was simple but hit the point
A great historian! My copy of "The Face of Battle" - German translation - dates of 1981! A copy of Intelligence in War still waits to be read! An extract was published years ago in a US quarterly publication covering Nelson's hunt for the French fleet in 1798. May he rest in peace!
One of the Greats, in my personal opinion: Sir John Keegan - Telegraph A truly great military historian. He will be greatly missed. Jim
He was a practicing Catholic. I am a Protestant, but I'll ask my Catholic relatives to light a candle.
There is a story about President Clinton seeking Keegan's advice on his speech that he was writing for 50th anniversary of the Normandy landings. Keegan told Clinton " don't forget about the Canadians". R.I.P Sir John
