The Auxiliary Territorial Service was formed to release men for front line duties. Early in the war the ATS became a part of the Army and its personnel became subject to military discipline (with some modifications). The other ranks carried the same ranks as men. ATS officers held Kings Commissions, which was not the case in other women’s services. Women were not allowed to carry arms, or to load and fire artillery. When required to do guard duty they carried pick axe handles. (Presumably it was more ladylike to beat intruders to death). ATS personnel eventually performed most tasks in Heavy Anti Aircraft units, except for loading and firing the guns. ATS companies were also formed for transport, signals and clerical duties. The First Aid Nursing Yeomanry was an older women’s service which was absorbed into the ATS. Its personnel formed only transport companies. Their officers were also commissioned and many agents going to occupied countries held commissions in the FANY’s. Our own dear Queen was commissioned into the ATS although her actual service amounted to a few days training at Windsor. ROYAL ARTILLERY SIGNALS SECTIONS. Headquarters Army Group RA Signal Section.
