Thanks to everyone for their responses so far.

I have done a bit of digging about the 42nd signals and they were based in Essex for a short period of time, as part of a series of moves, although the Lancashire bit stayed in the name.

Apparently in 1943 the troops were dispersed to other parts of the army and so will have ended up in different places, attached to different units.

My mother has said she believes her uncle was a dispatch rider at one time, and that he died when something went wrong with the big gun that they were firing, so clearly, it seems, he was not working as a signaller at Cassino.

I understand I can get his war record if I wait about a year but is there any way I can go and look at it myself or take copies in person?

I have dipped into other areas of the forum but haven't found a clear answer to this although it seems that some of you do go and get the info for others.

No you have to wait for the MoD to do that.
Have you applied for it yet ?

Once you know what unit he was in when he died you can go to the National Archives in Kew & see the war diaries.

Afraid not. It's a case of doing the best job on the application and waiting. They might prioritise living veterans' records, everyone else goes into the queue.

Thanks guys, no I haven't applied yet;it's on my to-do list. I will just have to be a little patient then (something which doesn't come naturally to me).
