Hi all, I am looking to see if anyone can find more information about my grandad as i've been given the honour of looking after his medals. I was looking to get them framed but wanted to find out as much information I could, so that I could then put the information in the back of the frame so years down the line all the information about him is there. After trying numerous sites i've not been able to find any of his service details and considering sending a request for military records but wanted to try here first see if anyone could come up with anything extra.

I vaguely remember my Gradma once telling me that at one point he was a POW but escaped (if true or my mind making it up im not sure)

All the information I have about him are

    Name Arthur William Lowe
    D.o.b 07-02-1919
    death Dec 1998
    Married to Doris Lowe
    service number 2361316
he was a signalmen for 30th corpse signals 1 company 6y section

    He has 4 medals
    the 1939 - 1945 star
    The Africa star
    the Italy star
    and the war medal

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks Stuart.

    Stuart.

Only his Service Record will give you a complete picture but if he only every served at HQ XXX Corps then he would have been part of the Eighth Army in North Africa and then the invasion of Sicily. After Sicily, XXX Corps went back to UK to prepare for the Normandy landings.

I suspect that he served in more parts of the Army than just HQ XXX Corps.

    Regards

    Frank

I have checked out the servicemen with the surname Lowe, intials A.W. and service number 2361316 in the only document which lists POWs in Italy - WO 392/21 - but he doesn't appear.

That service number certainly indicates an enlistment in the Royal Corps of Signals, but, the name/number does not come up in the casualty lists which contain names of those KIA, missing, wounded, POW. As recommended above research into a WW2 serviceman can only start with his service records, afraid there will be a long wait so you must apply asap.
