Found out my other grandfather was in the 773rd tank crushers division as a warrant officer. what is/was a warrant officer?
hello the below might help you http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrant_officer_(United_States) regards Clive
if he was a warrant officer (unknown what grade) in the tank destroyer battalion, is there a way to find out what he was in charge of?
Sheeesh! Do you really not know how to use an internet search engine? 773rd Tank Destroyer Battalion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I would suggest applying for his service records & reading the unit war diaries . Not sure how that is done for US units. Hopefully another member with more experience of that will chip in.
There were two warrant officers in a TD battalion. I would suspect that he played a command or adujant role in the supply or maintenance functions of the unit. I've never really explored the jobs of a WO in a TD, so my comment is speculation, using what I know about WOs in WWII. Army Warrant Officer History
In order to find out what your grandfather's duties were, what you need to do is dig into the table of organization and equipment (TO & E or just TOE) for a WWII tank destroyer battalion. The field manual for these units was FM 18-5; there were two editions, 1942 and 1944. Manuals were also written for the sub-units of TD battalions (reconnaissance company, TD company, etc). I know that FM 18-5 is available online in a number of electronic locations.
So, i have this picture , attached, and i don't know how i obtained it, as I am having trouble finding it in any archives. do you know where the army has these stored online?
