Avevo già visitato parecchi dei posti che hai fotografato nei due anni che ho trascorso in Sicilia. Che nostalgia! Pensavo, giusto giusto, di ritornare...

Just realised I failed to welcome you aboard and to congratulate you on some excellent pics so, Ben Venuto e mille grazie !.

The thread title of Sicily after 65 years interested me because, in my case, it's going to be Sicily after 66 years when I return there in September.

    Auguri !

I decided to shoot in HD the primosole area and bunkers that I knew from 30 years ago, advantage of having a motorcycle in sicily. I have a pict of my Laverda 750 sf at a pill box . I live on etna but visit the old haunts quite abit. Sigonella is amazing. It was a tiny base and now has grown to enormous proportions. Anyone know about sigonella and its origins ? While I was stationed there a few kids went on the back nine ( the golf course is gone now) and found a bunch of motars and tater mashers. The command captain freaked out that was it for the golf course.
I was told by a young sheep herder who was tending sheep on the plains of Catania about how his herd was wiped out by a pilot of an American fighter straffing the NAS1 base and was hit and died, he kept his finger on the trigger and straffed his whole herd of sheep. Not one sheep lived and he just went home, since he was out of a job. I also heard that the Sicilians had stolen convoy of trucks loaded with gas from the jerries. They took the drums and buried them east of NAS1 but forgot to mark them. They never found it. Also there is a reason that ampules wash up on the beach south of Catania. A hospital ship was sunk along with a uboat about 2 miles off shore near the trench. Buds of mine who dive found ALOT of wrecks between Siracusa and Catania near the trench cliff.

Where is the Gerbini airfield ?

There is no single airfield under the title of Gerbini. It was a group of airfields on the Plain of Catania and to the west of that city.
If you have a copy of Carlo D' Este's book Bitter Victory locally that will give you all the information you need. Also look in my profile at my Sicily threads. I have been researching Operation Husky ( Sicily 1943) for the last six years.
